Chapter 2 - The Penthouse and the CallEleven minutes earlier, inside a lavish private penthouse overlooking the Manhattan skyline, Marco Moretti stood near a floor-to-ceiling glass window, pouring two glasses of vintage amber scotch.

The room smelled of rich leather, expensive cigars, and a heavy, powdery floral perfume that did not belong to his wife.

Sitting on the velvet sofa behind him was Sophia Reynolds—the twenty-eight-year-old daughter of Marcus Reynolds, the chief executive of Reynolds Logistics, a powerful corporate entity that had been locked in a bloody, silent territory dispute with the Moretti syndicate for over six months.

Sophia wore an elegant champagne-colored silk dress, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders. Her dark eyes followed Marco’s broad shoulders as he moved toward her.

"You're distracted tonight, Marco," Sophia said softly, her voice carrying a smooth, calculated warmth. "That's three times you've checked your watch in twenty minutes."

Marco set the crystal scotch glass on the mahogany coffee table in front of her, his dark, sharp eyes unreadable. At thirty-five, Marco was a imposing figure—broad-shouldered, impeccably tailored, with dark slicked-back hair and a razor-sharp jawline that commanded absolute obedience in every boardroom and dark alley in New York.

"I have a long night ahead of me, Sophia," Marco replied, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "The docks in South Brooklyn require my personal oversight before the midnight shipment arrives."

Sophia reached out, her manicured fingers gently brushing against Marco's wrist. "Your father-in-law's shipping lanes are already secured, Marco. My father signed the merger documents two hours ago. You don't need to pretend that tonight is entirely about business."

Marco pulled his wrist back smoothly, stepping toward the window. "The merger with your father's company is a business alliance, Sophia. Nothing more. You should remember that."

Sophia's eyes narrowed slightly, a subtle flash of irritation crossing her polished features. "Is that why you haven't touched your drink? Or are you feeling guilty because your sweet, naive artist wife is currently sitting at her gallery show wondering where her powerful husband is?"

Marco’s entire posture instantly froze. The air in the penthouse seemed to drop ten degrees in a microsecond. He turned his head slowly, his dark obsidian eyes locking onto Sophia with a lethal intensity that made her breath hitch.

"Do not speak my wife's name in this room, Sophia," Marco warned, his voice dangerously quiet. "Ever."

Sophia swallowed hard, attempting to maintain her arrogant composure, but the sheer terror that Marco Moretti could project with a single glare was legendary across the eastern seaboard.

"I was only pointing out that Elena lives in a dream world, Marco," Sophia defended smoothly, standing up from the velvet couch. "She doesn't know who you really are. She thinks you're just a wealthy shipping executive with a stern personality. She doesn't know about the blood on your hands, or the fact that my father's syndicate holds half your offshore accounts. I know the truth about your world. I can actually stand beside you in the dark."

Before Marco could respond, his heavy leather suit jacket, resting on the back of a nearby chair, began to vibrate violently.

Marco stepped past Sophia, reached into his jacket pocket, and pulled out his private encrypted satellite phone.

The screen illuminated with three missed call notifications from Elena.

Timestamp: 11 minutes ago.

A sudden, sharp knot of deep foreboding tightened in Marco’s stomach. Elena never called three times in a row unless something was wrong. She knew his strict operational rules regarding private meetings. She respected his boundaries, even when those boundaries were slowly suffocating her.

Below the missed calls, a new text message flashed on the screen from his chief of security, Dominic.

DON MARCO. EMERGENCY. HIGHWAY 95 NORTH. ELENA'S CAR WAS TRAMPLED BY A COMMERCIAL TRUCK. SHE IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION. PARAMEDICS ON SCENE.

Marco's face went completely, ghost-white.

The crystal scotch glass in his left hand slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a hundred sharp pieces, amber liquid splashing across his Italian leather shoes.

"Marco?" Sophia asked, startled by the sudden violent shatter. "What happened?"

Marco didn't answer her. He didn't look at her. The cold, calculating Mafia Don was instantly gone, replaced by a frantic, terrified man whose absolute world had just been shattered into dust.

He pulled a platinum-plated firearm from his shoulder holster, racked the slide with a lethal click, and pointed it directly between Sophia Reynolds' eyes.

Sophia gasped in pure terror, falling backward onto the velvet sofa, her hands raised in absolute panic. "Marco! What are you doing?! Have you lost your mind?!"

"If your father's men had anything to do with what just happened on Highway 95," Marco whispered, his voice trembling with a horrifying, murderous rage that made the glass windows vibrate, "I will slaughter every single person who carries the Reynolds name before the sun comes up tomorrow."

Without waiting for her reply, Marco turned on his heel, kicked open the heavy penthouse doors, and sprinted down the private corridor toward the elevator.

His mind was screaming, repeating the same horrifying realization over and over again like a death march:

She called me eleven minutes ago.

May you like

I was standing in this room with another woman while my wife was bleeding in the rain.

Eleven minutes.
