Chapter 3 - The Hospital and the CluesThe rain outside Bellevue Hospital swept through the dark streets of Manhattan like a shroud.

A motorcade of four heavily armored black SUVs screeched to a halt directly outside the emergency room trauma bay, their tires smoking against the wet pavement. Before the vehicles had even fully stopped, Marco Moretti threw open the passenger door and stepped out into the pouring storm.

Behind him, six heavily armed Moretti syndicate enforcers scrambled out of the trailing SUVs, forming an impenetrable security perimeter around their Don.

Marco strode through the sliding glass doors of the trauma center, his dark coat soaked with rain, his face pale, his dark eyes burning with an unhinged, dangerous intensity.

Dominic, Marco's imposing, veteran chief of security, hurried across the tiled waiting room floor to meet him.

"Where is she, Dominic?!" Marco demanded, his hand gripping Dominic's leather lapel so tightly the stitching creaked. "Is she breathing?!"

"She's in Trauma Room 3, Don Marco," Dominic reported rapidly, his voice grave. "The surgeons are currently stabilizing her. She suffered multiple fractured ribs, a severe concussion, and significant internal trauma. The Mercedes was completely crushed by an unregistered commercial flatbed."

Marco released Dominic's coat, his chest heaving as he stared down the sterile white hallway toward the red CRITICAL TRAUMA sign.

"Did the driver of the truck survive?" Marco asked, his tone dropping into an arctic register.

Dominic shook his head grimly. "The truck was abandoned two miles down the highway. The driver vanished into the storm before local police units arrived on scene. But Don Marco... this wasn't an accidental collision."

Dominic reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a clear plastic evidence bag containing Elena's crushed, rain-soaked smartphone. The screen was spider-webbed with cracks, but the digital display was still faintly illuminated.

"Our tech team bypassed the lock screen before the police seized her vehicle," Dominic explained, handing the bag to Marco. "Look at the incoming text messages received four minutes before the impact."

Marco held the clear bag in his trembling hands, his eyes scanning the terrifying lines of text:

You should have stayed home. Turn around. He can't protect you from what's coming. We've been waiting for you to be alone.

Marco's breathing stopped completely. A cold, lethal fury flooded every vein in his body. Someone had been tracking his wife's exact movements. Someone knew she was leaving the estate alone tonight. Someone had calculated her exact driving route.

"Who sent these messages, Dominic?" Marco growled out, his hands shaking violently around the plastic bag.

"The signals were routed through a private encrypted server registered in Switzerland," Dominic answered. "But our intelligence team managed to pull the cell tower data from the underground garage beneath your estate where Elena started her drive tonight."

Dominic stepped closer, lowering his voice to a hushed whisper.

"A burner phone was activated inside your private estate garage thirty minutes before Elena left, Don Marco. The signal tracked her Mercedes for ten miles down the highway until the crash."

Marco's head snapped toward his chief of security, his dark eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "Inside my estate? Inside my private security perimeter?"

"Yes, Don Marco," Dominic confirmed solemnly. "Whoever organized this attack didn't just ambush your wife on the highway. They walked through your front gates. The traitor is inside your inner circle."

Before Marco could process the horrifying revelation, the double doors of Trauma Room 3 swung open.

A senior trauma surgeon stepped out into the hallway, pulling off his surgical mask, his face lined with deep exhaustion.

Marco sprinted down the hallway, stopping inches from the doctor. "How is my wife?!"

The doctor looked at Marco's rain-soaked, terrifying posture, taking a cautious step back. "Mr. Moretti... your wife is stabilized for now. She is conscious, though she is under heavy pain medication. She was extraordinarily lucky—the reinforced safety cage of her Mercedes saved her life."

"Can I see her?" Marco demanded instantly.

"Only for a few minutes," the doctor cautioned. "She has suffered severe trauma."

Marco didn't wait for further permission. He pushed past the surgeon and walked into the sterile, dimly lit trauma room.

The steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of the heart monitor filled the quiet room.

Elena lay in the center of the hospital bed, her pale face bruised, a white bandage wrapped around her forehead, an IV line connected to her delicate wrist. She looked small, fragile, and utterly broken against the harsh white sheets.

Marco felt his knees go weak. The man who had faced down rival cartel bosses and federal indictments without flinching felt his entire heart tear completely open. He walked slowly to the edge of the bed, dropping onto his knees beside her mattress, reaching out a trembling hand to gently touch her pale fingers.

"Elena..." Marco choked out, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated agony as tears finally welled in his dark eyes. "Elena... my sweet girl... I'm here. I'm right here."

Elena's eyelashes fluttered slowly. She opened her soft brown eyes, staring at him through a haze of pain and medication.

She looked at her husband—at his rain-soaked suit, his disheveled hair, his tear-streaked face.

Then, she slowly, painfully pulled her hand out of his grip.

"You... you didn't answer," Elena whispered, her voice barely a raspy thread in the quiet room.

Marco felt a physical blade plunge straight into his heart. "Elena, I'm so sorry... I swear to God on my life, I'm so sorry..."

"Eleven minutes..." Elena choked out, tears brimming in her eyes as she looked at the ceiling. "I was trapped in the metal... glass everywhere... and I called you..."

"I know, baby, I know," Marco wept, pressing his forehead against the metal edge of the hospital bed. "I will burn this entire city to the ground for what they did to you, Elena. I swear it to you."

Elena turned her head slowly, looking directly into Marco's eyes with a quiet, devastating clarity that cut deeper than any bullet.

"It wasn't a man who walked up to my car after the crash, Marco," Elena revealed, her raspy whisper shaking the room.

Marco froze, looking up at her. "What?"

"A woman stood outside my driver's window in the rain," Elena whispered, her breathing ragged. "She wore a dark coat. She had pale skin... and bright crimson lipstick. She looked down at me... and she told me to tell you that the Reynolds debt has been collected."
