Chapter 1

That betrayal had felt like a dagger straight through my heart. I had spent five years playing the dutiful, devoted wife, standing by his side through whispered rumors, hidden meetings, and the terrifying reality of his underworld empire. I had given up my own career, protected his reputation, and convinced myself that beneath the cold, calculating veneer of the city's most powerful man still beat the heart of the kind man who used to bring me coffee and kiss my forehead.
Instead, I had found him with Camille. And when I fled to my brother Dominic’s townhouse, seeking solace and refuge, I had no idea that the affair was merely a smoke screen for something far more sinister, criminal, and utterly calculated.
Sitting at Dominic's kitchen table under the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb, my hands trembled as I stared at the illuminated screen of my laptop. Dominic, a razor-sharp commercial litigation attorney who had spent years warning me about Sebastian’s world, leaned over my shoulder, his brow furrowed in deep concentration.
"Look at the timestamp, Katie," Dominic murmured, his voice tight with controlled fury. "It wasn't just a simple slush fund. It's an automated wire transfer schedule."
I swallowed hard, my throat dry as dust. The screen displayed the financial ledger of the Whitmore Children's Health Foundation—the very charity I had poured my heart, soul, and countless volunteer hours into over the past three years. The foundation was dedicated to providing specialized, life-saving medical care for underprivileged children across Illinois. It was my pride, my purpose, and my sanctuary away from the dark shadows of Sebastian's mafia underworld.
And right there, staring back at me, were five distinct, massive payments sent to Laurent Advisory, a phantom consulting firm owned by Camille Laurent.
Total sum: $684,200.
"I didn't authorize these," I whispered, the words catching in my throat. "I have never even heard of Laurent Advisory until tonight."
"Look at the authorization column," Dominic instructed, pointing a steady finger at the glowing display.
My eyes traced the line.Approved by: Catherine H. Whitmore — Foundation Chair.
"That's my electronic signature," I said, my voice rising in panic. "How is that possible? I never signed this!"
"Because someone did it for you," Dominic said grimly, straightening up and pacing across the tiled floor. "Think about it, Katie. Camille wasn't just your husband's secretary or his mistress. She had access to your administrative profile at the foundation. She handled correspondence, coordinated gala seating, and managed document routing while you were working on hospital grants. She had complete, unfettered access to your digital credentials."
A cold sweat broke out across my back. The pieces of a terrifying puzzle began clicking into place with horrifying speed.
It wasn't just about an affair. It wasn't just about humiliating me or driving me out of the Whitmore estate. Camille Laurent had systematically engineered a multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme, draining a children's charity, and she had meticulously framed me for every single penny of it. If an independent audit had triggered naturally at the end of the fiscal quarter, federal investigators wouldn't have looked at Sebastian. They wouldn't have looked at Camille. Every subpoena, every indictment, and every prison sentence would have pointed directly at me.
I would have taken the fall for federal grand larceny, wire fraud, and charity embezzlement, destroying my reputation, my freedom, and my life—while Camille walked away a multi-millionaire, perhaps right into Sebastian's arms as his new, untouchable queen.
"And look at this," Dominic whispered, clicking on the most recent file. "This one was queued up just twenty minutes ago. Another $1.2 million scheduled to clear offshore before Friday morning."
I stared at the screen, a strange, hollow calm washing over me, completely replacing the grief I had felt earlier that night. Tears were a luxury for women who didn't have a war to fight. The heartbroken, weeping wife who had fled Sebastian's office in tears died right there at that kitchen table. In her place rose Catherine Hayes Whitmore—a woman whose veins carried the fierce, unyielding spirit of the Hayes family, and a woman who was about to show Chicago what happened when you pushed a tiger too far.
"We aren't going to the police yet," I said quietly, locking eyes with my brother.
Dominic raised an eyebrow, a flicker of proud approval crossing his sharp features. "What do you suggest, Katie?"
"We trap them," I replied, my voice steady and cold as ice. "If we go to the authorities right now, Camille's digital footprint has enough plausible deniability that her high-priced lawyers might delay or obscure her involvement, or worse, pin it entirely on a 'system error' or an 'unauthorized hack.' We need undeniable, ironclad proof that bypasses every legal loophole."
"And how do we get that?" Dominic asked.
"By letting her think she's winning," I said, a dangerous edge in my tone. "She thinks I'm hiding in a corner, crying over a cheating husband. She thinks that $1.2 million transfer is going to clear on Friday without a hitch. We are going to let her execute the final transfer—right into an account that we monitor, while my husband finds out exactly what kind of viper he's been keeping in his bed."

Dominic crossed his arms, nodding slowly. "Sebastian won't like it. When the Chicago underworld finds out someone tried to use his own empire and his own wife as a scapegoat, blood will run in the streets."
"Let it run," I said, standing up from the chair. "Sebastian wanted a mafia queen, not a doormat. It's time to remind him who built this dynasty by his side."
