Chapter 2

Furthermore, we discovered something even more shocking: Camille wasn't acting alone. Her wire transfers weren't just vanishing into random offshore shell companies; they were funneling into a massive, heavily encrypted international logistics syndicate known as the Vane Syndicate—one of Sebastian’s oldest and most ruthless international rivals in the shipping and contraband markets.
For months, Sebastian had been waging a quiet, brutal corporate and territorial war against the Vane Syndicate, pouring millions into private security and naval logistics to protect his shipping lanes across the Great Lakes. If the Vane Syndicate successfully drained Whitmore Holdings' charitable and corporate reserves while framing his wife for federal felonies, Sebastian's entire empire would crumble from within, leaving him completely vulnerable to a hostile takeover.
Camille wasn't just a greedy secretary having an affair with her billionaire boss. She was a high-level corporate spy and operative planted inside Sebastian's inner sanctum to destroy him from the inside out.
At 9:00 AM, I stood in front of the massive oak doors of the master suite in the Whitmore estate on the Gold Coast. I hadn't planned on returning so soon, but Dominic and I agreed that the best way to keep Camille and Sebastian off balance was to act unpredictable.
I unlocked the front door and walked inside. The house was deathly quiet. The servants moved about in hushed whispers, casting nervous glances in my direction. Word of my abrupt departure the previous afternoon had clearly filtered through the household staff, and the tension in the air was palpable.
Before I could walk up the grand staircase to pack a few essentials, the heavy double doors of the home office swung open, and Sebastian stepped out.
He looked like a man who had aged ten years overnight. His dark hair was slightly disheveled, his expensive tailored suit jacket was discarded over the banister, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his slate-gray eyes. When he saw me standing in the foyer, he stopped dead in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat.
"Catherine," he breathed out, rushing forward as if he wanted to pull me into his arms. "Thank God. You came back."
I raised a single hand, stepping backward with cold, calculated precision. The gesture stopped him instantly. His arms dropped to his sides, and the look of desperate hope on his face shattered into raw anguish.
"Don't touch me, Sebastian," I said, my voice devoid of emotion.
"Please, Katie," he pleaded, his voice thick with exhaustion and panic. "I’ve spent the last twenty hours searching everywhere for you. I called your brother, I checked every hotel in the city... I haven't slept. I sent security to comb the streets. I was out of my mind with worry."
"Were you worried about me, Sebastian, or were you worried about what I might find in your office?" I asked, tilting my head slightly.
He flinched as if he had been physically struck. "What are you talking about? Nothing matters except you. I fired Camille last night."
I let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Fired her? Oh, Sebastian. You are so much more blind than I ever realized."
"What does that mean?" he demanded, his alpha authority instantly flaring up, though it sounded hollow and cracked around the edges. "Tell me what's going on."
"It means," I said, stepping closer until I was standing right in front of him, looking straight into his eyes with an intensity that made the fearsome Mafia King of Chicago step back, "that your precious little secretary isn't just warming your desk. She's systematically dismantling your entire empire, draining your foundation, and framing me for federal grand larceny to send me to prison."
Sebastian stared at me, his jaw dropping in absolute shock. For a second, his brain struggled to process the sheer magnitude of my words.
"That's... that's impossible," he stammered. "Camille is just an administrative coordinator. She handles schedules and—"
"She handles the Vane Syndicate's backdoor wire transfers," I interrupted, pulling a printed dossier from my handbag and slapping it hard against his chest. "Read it, Sebastian. Every single page. Every forged signature. Every unauthorized transfer of foundation funds totaling nearly seven hundred thousand dollars, with another 1.2 million scheduled to clear into a Vane-controlled offshore account this Friday morning."
Sebastian snatched the dossier from his chest, his hands trembling as he flipped open the pages. His eyes scanned the financial logs, the IP tracking data, and the forensic breakdown prepared by Dominic's firm. As the realization washed over him, the color drained entirely from his face, replaced by a terrifying, murderous rage that instantly chilled the air in the foyer.
The temperature in the room plummeted. The polite, grieving husband vanished, and the ruthless, feared Mafia King of Chicago awoke.

When Sebastian looked back up at me, his eyes were pitch-black, burning with an unholy fury that made even the guards outside look away in terror.
"She," Sebastian whispered, his voice dropping into a low, lethal growl that vibrated through the floorboards, "will wish she had never been born."
