Chapter 4 - The Final Trap And The Fall Of The Corporate SpyThe heavy mahogany doors clicked shut with a definitive, chilling sound.

Camille stood in the center of the spacious office, her posture stiff, her fingers gripping her tablet so tightly her knuckles were stark white. She forced a polite, trembling smile as she looked between Sebastian and me.
"I'm not quite sure what this is about, Mr. Whitmore," Camille said, her voice betraying a nervous quiver. "If this is about my resignation or the transition of my duties since yesterday, I'm happy to—"
"It's not about your resignation, Camille," Sebastian interrupted smoothly, walking slowly toward his mahogany desk. "It's about your promotion."
She blinked, confusion washing over her features. "My... promotion?"
"Yes," I stepped forward, resting my hands lightly on the edge of the desk where she had stood kissing my husband just a few days ago. "From corporate secretary and underground spy for the Vane Syndicate, straight to federal inmate number one."
The color drained entirely from Camille's face. She staggered backward a half-step, her breath catching in her throat. "I—I don't know what you're talking about! You're insane! I'm calling security—"
"Security is already outside, and they take their orders exclusively from me," Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a lethal growl. He turned his computer monitor around so it faced her. "Look familiar, Miss Laurent?"
On the screen was the live dashboard of the Whitmore Foundation's financial portal.
Right there, flashing in bold red letters, was the status of the 1.2 million dollar wire transfer she had queued up just moments ago:STATUS: INTERCEPTED & FROZEN. DESTINATION ACCOUNT REROUTED TO FEDERAL ASSET RECOVERY.
Camille let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth.
"You thought you were clever, didn't you?" Dominic spoke up, stepping forward with a thick manila folder which he dropped onto the desk. "Using Catherine's stolen electronic credentials, funneling charitable funds into offshore shell companies, and setting her up to take the fall for grand larceny while you bled Whitmore Holdings dry for Viktor Vane."
Camille's eyes darted frantically around the room, realizing there was no escape. The mask of calm professionalism shattered completely, replaced by pure, unadulterated panic.
"You can't prove anything!" she shrieked, her voice rising in hysteria. "It was all her! Catherine managed the foundation! She signed the documents! The authorities will arrest her, not me!"
"Oh, really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
I pulled my own phone from my pocket, tapped the screen, and played an audio recording at maximum volume.
The speakers filled the office with the crystal-clear sound of Camille's voice speaking on a secure satellite call just twenty-four hours earlier:"...Don't worry, Viktor. Once the 1.2 million clears tomorrow, the feds will trace the digital signature directly to Catherine Whitmore. Sebastian will be completely ruined, and our syndicate will acquire his shipping ports by the end of the month..."
The recording looped twice before I hit stop.
Camille stared at me, trembling from head to toe, tears of absolute terror spilling down her cheeks. Her legs buckled underneath her, and she dropped heavily onto her knees right on the plush carpet.
"Please," she sobbed, holding her hands out toward Sebastian. "Mr. Whitmore... Sebastian... please! I was just following orders! Viktor Vane threatened my family! He made me do it!"
Sebastian looked down at her with eyes colder than winter ice. He didn't feel a shred of pity. In the mafia world, betrayal was the one sin that could never, ever be forgiven.
"Viktor Vane will be joining you shortly," Sebastian said smoothly. "As for your family, I suggest you start writing letters, because you won't be seeing them for a very, very long time."
The office door flew open, and two federal agents accompanied by Sebastian's private security detail marched inside.
"Camille Laurent," the lead federal agent announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in the light. "You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of charitable funds, identity theft, and conspiracy against interstate commerce. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the cold steel clicked around her wrists, Camille screamed, thrashing wildly as the agents hauled her up and dragged her out of the executive suite. Her desperate cries echoed down the hallway until the heavy double doors closed, sealing her fate forever.
Silence descended upon the office once more.
I stood by the window, watching the gray fog over Chicago finally begin to clear, letting the brilliant afternoon sun break through the clouds.
Sebastian walked up quietly behind me, stopping a respectful distance away. He didn't try to touch me, and he didn't offer any cheap excuses.
"Viktor Vane's shipping operations have already been seized by our private security coalition," Sebastian said quietly. "His syndicate is finished in Chicago. And your foundation's funds have been fully recovered, plus a five-million-dollar restitution penalty paid directly from Vane's personal accounts."
I turned slowly to look at him. "And what about us, Sebastian?"
He looked down, his shoulders heavy with the weight of everything he had nearly lost. "I don't deserve you, Katie. After everything I put you through... after my arrogance and my mistakes... I know I have no right to ask you to stay."
I studied him for a long moment. I saw the broken man, but I also saw the fierce protector who had torn an empire down to its foundations just to clear my name. The marriage we had wasn't the innocent fairy tale we started five years ago. It was forged in fire, tested by betrayal, and proven through war.
"You're right, Sebastian," I said softly, walking past him toward the door. "You don't deserve me. Not yet."
He looked up quickly, hope flashing in his eyes. "Katie—"
"But," I paused at the doorway, looking back over my shoulder with a faint, knowing smile, "if you ever want a chance to prove you're worthy of being the king by my side... you're going to have to work for it. Starting with dinner at home tonight. And you're cooking."
May you like
A slow, genuine smile broke across Sebastian's face for the first time in days.
"It's a deal, my Queen," he said softly.
