Chapter 1 - Shards of Crystal and the Fake Debt That Triggered a War

The cold reality of Philadelphia’s elite society hit Hannah Reid long before she ever felt the sharp bite of crystal glass embedding into her palm. Working as a banquet waitress at the annual charity gala was supposed to be just another exhausting night to pay for groceries and her six-year-old son Leo's upcoming school fees. But Vanessa Corbett had other plans. With a malicious step backward and a shove disguised as clumsiness, Vanessa sent Hannah’s tray of twelve champagne flutes crashing to the polished marble floor. When Vanessa shrieked in feigned horror and demanded an apology for her ruined designer dress, Hannah refused to play the submissive servant. “I know you stepped backward on purpose,” she fired back, a statement that sent shockwaves of disbelief through the three hundred wealthy guests present. No one dared talk back to a Corbett.

Before Vanessa could retaliate, the room parted for Matteo Vescari. At thirty-nine, the most feared mafia boss in Philadelphia commanded absolute terror and respect without ever raising his voice. To the absolute shock of the entire ballroom, Matteo didn't side with the powerful socialite; instead, he stepped right beside Hannah, called out Vanessa’s lie, ordered her to apologize, and offered his hand to help Hannah up from the glass shards. Refusing to let her walk home unprotected, he ensured she had a safe escort after her shift. But the real nightmare began the moment Hannah stepped into the dim, echoing shadows of the parking garage.

Two menacing thugs intercepted her, blocking her car with a forged document claiming she owed an eighty-thousand-dollar debt. As she furiously snatched the paper from their hands under the flickering fluorescent lights, her blood ran cold. The debt wasn’t hers. Printed clearly at the top of the fraudulent promissory note was the name of the man who had just defended her inside: Matteo Vescari. Someone was framing her using the mafia boss’s name, and before she could even process the danger, the heavy footsteps of Matteo’s personal enforcer, Elias Romano, echoed across the concrete as he stepped out of the shadows to intercept the thugs. The trap had sprung, and Hannah was standing right in the crosshairs of a war she never asked to join.
