Chapter 3 - The Secret Little Boy Waiting in the Dark

While Matteo’s men tore apart the financial records of Philadelphia’s elite to find the traitor who framed Hannah, Matteo insisted on driving her home personally. The armored town car pulled up outside a modest, peeling apartment building in a quiet, working-class neighborhood two blocks from where Hannah worked. As Matteo stepped out to open her door, he looked around the desolate street with deep skepticism. “You live here alone?” he asked, his protective instincts flaring up. Hannah scoffed, slipping past him. “I live here with my son. And we manage just fine without armed guards or billion-dollar bank accounts.”
She unlocked the heavy wooden door of her apartment, bracing herself for the usual routine. But tonight was different. Pushed halfway under the door was a second envelope—identical to the one the thugs had handed her in the parking garage. Panic surged through her veins. She snatched it up just as a sleepy voice called out from the narrow hallway. “Mommy?” Little six-year-old Leo stepped out rubbing his eyes, wearing his favorite dinosaur pajamas, clutching a stuffed bear. “Why are you so late? I got scared.” Hannah dropped the envelope behind her back, her heart hammering against her ribs as she rushed to scoop her son into her arms, burying her face in his hair. “I’m right here, baby. Mommy had a long day at work.”
It was then that Leo blinked past her shoulder and noticed the towering, impeccably dressed stranger standing silently in their cramped doorway. Matteo Vescari stepped across the threshold, his imposing presence instantly shrinking the small living room. His dark eyes darted past Hannah, locking onto the little boy in her arms. Something shifted inside Matteo—an inexplicable, violent pull in his chest that defied every logical instinct he possessed. He had spent his entire life building walls, trusting no one, and accepting the grim reality that an old enemy's poisoning years ago had left him permanently infertile and without an heir. Yet, looking into the bright, curious eyes of the six-year-old boy staring back at him from Hannah’s embrace, Matteo felt the absolute foundations of his universe tilt off their axis.
