Chapter 3 - The Midnight Confession by the FireplaceThe grand dining room of the Moretti estate was a cathedral of holiday excess, featuring a massive sixteen-foot Christmas tree decorated with blown-glass ornaments, a roaring stone fireplace, and a mahogany table laden with roasted meats, fine wines, and silver tableware.

Seated directly beside Luca at the head of the table, I felt like I was performing on a Broadway stage without a rehearsal. Throughout the multi-course meal, family members—aunts, uncles, and intimidating cousins involved in real estate and international shipping—tossed subtle, probing questions our way.

"So, Emma," Uncle Richard boomed from across the table, carving a slice of prime rib. "Luca tells us you manage his corporate schedule. Must be a nightmare keeping track of a man who never sleeps."

"It has its moments," I smiled politely, cutting into my duck breast. "Though Mr. Moretti is usually very organized when he remembers to eat."

Several family members chuckled, and Luca gave me a warm, sideways glance that felt entirely too intimate to be staged. "She keeps me alive, Uncle Richard. Literally."

As the dinner wound down and guests drifted toward the drawing rooms for brandy and cigars, I slipped away quietly toward the back terrace doors, needing a moment of crisp winter air to clear my head.

The stone terrace overlooked the snow-covered Westchester gardens, glowing softly under the moonlight. I wrapped my arms around myself, shivering slightly in the thin silk gown, watching my breath plume into white clouds in the freezing night air.

A moment later, heavy footsteps crunched on the snowy stones behind me.

A warm, heavy weight settled over my shoulders. I turned to find Luca wrapping his own cashmere tuxedo jacket around me. The fabric was still warm from his body, carrying the clean scent of cedarwood and expensive cologne.

"You'll catch pneumonia," he scolded gently, stepping up beside me at the stone balustrade.

"I wanted some quiet," I admitted, pulling the lapels of his jacket closer around myself. "Your family is... intense."

"They're protective," Luca corrected softly, his dark eyes reflecting the golden lights spilling from the French doors. "And they're usually very good at sniffing out lies. Which is why I'm impressed by how easily they bought into our story tonight."

My heart gave a painful, complicated squeeze. I turned my head to look out over the gardens. "About that, Luca... maybe we should talk about how we're going to handle the fallout of this 'fake' relationship when we get back to Manhattan on Monday."

Silence stretched between us, broken only by the distant sound of Christmas carols drifting from the ballroom.

"Why do you keep calling it fake?" Luca asked.

The quiet gravity in his voice made me turn back to look at him. He wasn't smiling. His face was carved from stone, yet his dark eyes burned with an intensity that made it difficult to draw breath.

"Because we both know what this is," I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. "You needed a date to appease your grandmother and put Francesca in her place. I needed the holiday bonus and a night away from my budget spreadsheets. Once Christmas is over, we go back to the office. Assistant and boss."

Luca didn't answer immediately. He took a slow, deliberate step closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the heat radiating off his tall frame.

"Do you really think I brought you here tonight just to play a role, Emma?" he asked, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through my chest.

"Didn't you?"

"From the very first day you walked into my office three years ago carrying a stack of disorganized zoning files," Luca said, his gaze locked intensely on my lips, "you organized my chaotic life, stood up to stubborn contractors who tried to intimidate you, and never once backed down from me when I was being an impossible bastard."

I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry. "Luca..."

"I didn't choose you tonight because you were convenient," he interrupted, reaching out to gently cup my cheek with his warm, calloused hand. His thumb brushed softly across my cheekbone. "I chose you because for three years, you have been the only real thing in my life. Every model, every socialite, every corporate climber I've ever met wanted my name, my money, or my power. You are the only woman who ever looked past the Moretti empire and saw me."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. The cold wind didn't matter anymore. The frozen terrace didn't matter. There was only the heat of his hand against my skin and the raw, undeniable truth burning in his eyes.

"And Francesca?" I whispered, my voice cracking. "What she said about men like you marrying for territory and bloodlines?"

"My father built an empire on blood and fear," Luca said, his voice hardening with a fierce, protective resolve. "He believed love was a weakness. But everything I've built—everything I am—belongs to me. And I choose who I give my life to."

He stepped even closer, his other arm wrapping securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest beneath the winter stars.

"Stay with me, Emma," he murmured against my hair, his breath warm against my ear. "Not just for Christmas. Not just as my assistant. Stay as my wife."

Before I could process the words, before I could form a single rational thought, his lips descended and captured mine in a kiss that erased every doubt, every fear, and every boundary we had ever drawn between us.

It wasn't a fake kiss for an audience. It was desperate, passionate, and entirely consuming—a silent promise spoken in the freezing December air that changed our world forever.
