Chapter 4 - The Boardroom ConfrontationThe holiday weekend passed in a blur of heated stolen glances, quiet conversations by the roaring library fireplace, and a growing, undeniable tenderness from a man the city believed was entirely devoid of a heart.

By Monday morning, however, the glittering illusion of the Westchester estate collided violently with the harsh reality of corporate Manhattan.

The private elevator doors of Moretti Holdings opened directly onto the executive penthouse floor at 8:45 AM sharp. I stepped out carrying a fresh, double-shot espresso for Luca, my heart beating with a strange new rhythm. We had returned as a couple, holding hands in the private car all the way back into the city, but walking back into the office meant stepping back onto the battleground where our professional lives had been forged.

As I approached my desk outside his corner office, I found Francesca Rossi standing by my assistant console, casually flipping through a confidential folder marked Property Acquisition - Hudson Yards.

I froze, anger instantly replacing my morning calm.

"Put that down, Francesca," I said sharply, stepping forward and snatching the folder from her hands. "That is classified corporate property."

Francesca didn't look flustered in the least. She smoothed down her designer pencil skirt, offering a cold, malicious smile. "Relax, darling. I was just reviewing what my father’s firm is about to acquire out from under you. You really thought Luca was going to hand over the Hudson Yards contract to a glorified secretary?"

Before I could respond, the heavy wooden doors of Luca’s private office swung open.

Luca stepped out, wearing a charcoal-grey business suit, looking every bit the ruthless corporate titan. His dark eyes darted from Francesca to me, immediately sensing the razor-sharp tension in the air.

"What is going on out here?" Luca asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

"Darlin'," Francesca purred instantly, turning toward him with a sickeningly sweet expression. "I came by to discuss the joint venture terms between Rossi Shipping and Moretti Holdings. But it seems your assistant has some attitude issues regarding who actually runs this company."

Luca didn't look at Francesca. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on me, reading the frustration written across my face.

"Francesca," Luca said, every syllable clipped and lethal. "Who gave you permission to enter my private executive floor?"

Francesca’s smile faltered slightly. "Well, your head of security downstairs let me up. We’re discussing business, Luca—family business. My father expects us to finalize the partnership terms by tomorrow, especially after our... arrangement at your family dinner."

"Let's get one thing straight," Luca stepped forward, closing the distance between them until Francesca was forced to take a nervous step backward. "There is no partnership between Moretti Holdings and Rossi Shipping. Your father’s portfolio has been flagged for federal compliance audits, and your attempts to access my classified acquisitions folders just now constitute corporate espionage."

Francesca’s jaw dropped. "You're... you're cutting ties with us? Over her?!"

"I am cutting ties with you because your family is corrupt, incompetent, and criminal," Luca stated coldly, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the penthouse. "And as for Emma—she isn't my assistant anymore."

My breath hitched. I stepped forward. "Luca, what are you—?"

Luca turned his head, reaching out to take my hand in his warm grip, pulling me gently to his side in front of a stunned Francesca.

"Emma is my equal," Luca announced clearly, looking down at me with absolute devotion before returning his cold gaze to Francesca. "And as of this morning, she is the newly appointed Chief Operating Officer of Moretti Holdings. She runs this entire company alongside me. Security will escort you out of the building immediately."

Francesca looked like she had been struck across the face. She opened her mouth to scream, to threaten, to lash out, but the cold, dead look in Luca’s eyes silenced her completely.

Two burly corporate security guards materialized out of the hallway instantly, flanking her on either side.

"Get out," Luca ordered quietly.

Without another word, a humiliated and defeated Francesca was marched toward the elevator banks, her heels clicking in furious retreat until the doors slid shut.

Silence descended over the executive floor.

I stared up at Luca, my chest heaving with a mixture of shock, adrenaline, and overwhelming gratitude. "Chief Operating Officer? Luca, you didn't consult me about a promotion!"

"You've been doing the job of a COO for the last two years without the title or the salary," Luca noted calmly, a small, knowing smile touching his lips. "It was time I made it official. Unless, of course, you want to quit and find another boss?"

I let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh, shaking my head. "You're completely impossible."

May you like

"I'm completely yours," he corrected softly, pulling me closer against his chest right there in the open corridor.

And as the Manhattan snow began to fall outside the towering glass windows, I knew with absolute certainty that no matter what corporate battles lay ahead, I had already won the only prize that mattered.
