Chapter 5

Claire did not tell Ryan immediately.

For almost three weeks she said nothing.

That mattered to Adam.

It meant her first instinct had not been conspiracy.

It had been denial.

Claire later told the investigator:

“I kept thinking maybe it meant another Ryan.”

There had been no other Ryan at Northgate Auto.

Then:

“I thought maybe Julia was confused because she was hurt.”

Julia had written the words before the crash.

Forensic ink aging and a photograph from Sophie’s second birthday later confirmed the writing was already on the back long before Claire entered the family.

Claire eventually confronted Ryan.

He broke down.

He told her about the brake hose.

About Harold.

About the signed inspection.

About the crash.

About three years of silence.

Claire asked whether the defect definitely caused Julia’s accident.

Ryan said no.

That distinction became the foundation of everything Claire did afterward.

No one could prove the hose failed.

Rain really had been heavy.

Julia really had been driving through a dangerous curve.

So Claire told herself disclosure would destroy Ryan’s life over something uncertain.

Adam read that portion of the transcript twice.

Melissa watched him.

“You’re angry because she chose him.”

“Yes.”

“Be precise.”

Adam looked at her.

Melissa continued.

“She did not know for most of your relationship.”

That was important.

Claire had not met Adam as part of some long-term plan.

She had not married him to gain access to Julia’s evidence.

Their relationship had been real.

That somehow made the last three months worse.

Claire loved Adam.

She helped raise Sophie.

And when she discovered her brother had hidden information about Julia’s death, she chose her brother.

Repeatedly.

First by saying nothing.

Then by searching legal consequences secretly.

Then by trying to locate what Julia left behind.

Then by planning an international trip with Sophie without Adam’s permission.

Adam asked Melissa:

“Why take Sophie?”

“We don’t know yet.”

The answer came from Ryan’s phone.

Police lawfully obtained it after the attempted removal and evidence-preservation issues expanded the investigation.

A message from Claire three days earlier:

If Adam sees the back, he reports everything immediately.

Ryan:

Then get the frame first.

Claire:

Sophie won’t give it up. She sleeps with it.

Ryan:

Then take both.

Claire:

You mean the picture?

Ryan:

I mean Sophie. Adam won’t burn your life down while you have his daughter overseas.

Adam stopped reading.

The travel was not about protecting Sophie.

Sophie was leverage.
