Chapter 9
The reopened investigation produced the most important record from the least dramatic source.
A warranty spreadsheet.
Northgate Auto’s discount supplier had internally flagged a batch of brake hoses for premature fitting separation.
The supplier notified several customers.
Harold Cole received the notice four days before Julia’s service visit.
Investigators recovered the email from an archived account.
STOP INSTALLATION — LOT 8C17 — POSSIBLE PRESSURE LEAK AT CRIMP.
Northgate had purchased twelve hoses from that lot.
Nine could be traced.
Two were returned.
One remained unaccounted for.
Julia’s vehicle used the same hose dimensions.
Adam stared at the report.
“Can they prove hers came from that batch?”
“Not directly,” Melissa said.
The wrecked part no longer existed.
Then investigators found Ryan’s text messages to Harold from the service date.
Old phone backups.
Ryan:
This is one of the recalled ones.
Harold:
We don’t have OEM in stock. Use it. Customer already waited.
Ryan:
Supplier said stop install.
Harold:
Flush it and road test. It’s fine.
Ryan:
I’m not signing that.
Harold:
Then don’t come in tomorrow.
Ten minutes later:
Ryan:
Fine.
That single word mattered.
Ryan had objected.
Then complied.
The next text arrived after Julia left.
Ryan:
Pedal still felt soft once.
Harold:
Weather coming. If she complains tomorrow we swap it.
She never got tomorrow.
After the crash, Harold texted:
Delete everything about the hose. Official invoice inspection only.
Ryan replied:
What if it failed?
Harold:
Police said rain. Leave it there.
Ryan obeyed again.
Clue after clue converged.
Ryan knew the installed part came from a recalled batch.
He knew the pedal behaved abnormally.
He knew Harold intended to conceal the installation.
And after Julia died, he remained silent.
Still, Part 10 contained one more surprise.

Claire had claimed Ryan finally confessed only three months earlier.
The recovered messages showed that was not completely true.
