Chapter 6

Ryan’s lawyer argued the messages sounded worse than they were.

He claimed “have his daughter overseas” meant Claire believed Adam would negotiate calmly if everyone had physical distance.

Melissa called that what it was.

“Using a child to influence another adult.”

The police focused on conduct, not euphemisms.

The airline tickets had been purchased forty-eight hours before Adam unexpectedly came home early.

A hotel reservation existed under Claire’s maiden name.

So did an airport car service.

More troubling was a notarized travel-consent letter supposedly signed by Adam.

It authorized Claire to take Sophie internationally for three weeks.

Adam had never seen it.

His signature looked genuine at first glance.

It was not.

A digital copy had been lifted from an old school enrollment form.

Claire admitted preparing the letter.

Ryan found an online notary service willing to authenticate the document after being shown identification materials Claire possessed through the household files.

The transaction became part of the criminal investigation.

Adam felt physically sick.

They had not been improvising on the staircase.

They had been preparing to remove Sophie for days.

Yet Ryan continued insisting the underlying mechanical question was uncertain.

Police reopened Julia’s case for review.

Not as a homicide.

Not yet as any particular crime.

As a death investigation involving potentially withheld mechanical evidence and false inspection records.

The original wrecked vehicle had been destroyed years earlier.

That hurt.

No brake hose remained to test.

But investigators had high-resolution insurance photographs.

One image showed fluid staining near the front wheel assembly.

Another showed a replacement fitting inconsistent with the manufacturer’s original part.

The insurer had noticed it three years earlier.

Northgate Auto said the shop had not replaced the hose.

Ryan’s service invoice also said no replacement occurred.

Yet the photograph suggested someone had.

The mystery changed.

Ryan claimed he only inspected the hose.

If a replacement part was present, who installed it?

Victor Lane denied knowing.

Harold Cole was dead.

Old purchasing records became critical.

Adam now understood why Claire had panicked after finding her father’s boxes.

They contained the one archive capable of answering questions the destroyed car no longer could.
