Chapter 2 - The Contract with the Devil and the Gates of Costa ManorThe interior of the custom-built luxury Maybach limousine was entirely silent, save for the hushed, whisper-quiet hum of its climate-controlled engine as it glided effortlessly through the rain-slicked, neon-lit city streets. The cabin smelled luxuriously of aged leather, subtle tobacco, and the signature, intoxicating spicy sandalwood cologne worn by the billionaire sitting right beside me.

I sat rigidly against the ultra-plush leather seat, my heart hammering like a trapped bird against my ribs. I stared down in absolute disbelief at my left hand resting on my lap. On my ring finger sat a breathtaking, heavy platinum band holding a massive, flawless black diamond that caught the dim overhead cabin lights. It felt impossibly heavy—heavy like a golden padlock locking me into a world I didn't understand.
Beside me, Roman Costa relaxed effortlessly against the upholstery, slowly swirling a glass of sparkling mineral water. His terrifying, lethal mafia aura hadn't entirely vanished, but the raw, explosive rage he had displayed inside the Obsidian Club was now neatly concealed behind a mask of calm, calculated executive authority.
"You can take the ring off if it makes you feel uncomfortable," Roman said quietly, breaking the heavy silence without turning his head to look at me. "Though I strongly advise keeping it securely on your finger whenever we are in public view."
I swallowed hard, finally turning my head to face him fully. "Who are you really? And why on earth did you just announce to the most dangerous, ruthless men in this city that I'm your wife?"
Roman set his crystal glass down into the armrest holder and turned to face me, his intense slate-grey eyes searching my face with unblinking focus.
"I am Roman Costa. And I didn't technically lie to them, Sloan," Roman replied calmly. "As far as the public record, the underworld syndicates, and the civil courts are concerned... you are my legal wife as of eight o'clock tonight."
"That's completely insane!" I exclaimed, my voice trembling with a chaotic mixture of lingering fear, utter exhaustion, and adrenaline. "I have never laid eyes on you before tonight in my entire life! I'm just a struggling waitress! My father is paralyzed in a charity nursing home, my life is completely in ruins, and I—"
"I know every single detail about who you are, Sloan," Roman interrupted, his voice dropping into a steady, hypnotic rhythm. "I know that your father, Arthur Vance, was framed by Preston Hayes. I know that Hayes forged corporate signatures on bank loan guarantees to steal thirty million dollars from Vance Construction. I know your father suffered a massive ischemic stroke three days before his scheduled wrongful arrest, and I know you've been working eighteen hours a day between this nightclub and a greasy diner just to pay six thousand dollars a month in private medical bills."
I stared at him in complete, stunned silence. "How... how on earth do you know all of that about me?"
"Because I have been investigating Preston Hayes and his financial partners for six months," Roman replied coldly. "And because, to be entirely honest with you, I need you just as desperately as you currently need me."
I blinked rapidly. "You need me? You're a billionaire real estate mogul! You control half the corporate and underground assets in this city!"
"I control a business empire originally built by my late father," Roman said, his expression darkening slightly with a shadow of past grief. "And according to my father's ironclad, legally binding, non-negotiable will, I must be legally married to a woman of respectable, legitimate lineage by my thirty-sixth birthday in order to retain my fifty-one percent voting majority in Costa International Holdings."
He leaned forward slightly, resting his elbows on his knees. "My thirty-sixth birthday is exactly three weeks away from today. My corrupt, power-hungry uncle, Marcus Costa, has been waiting like a vulture for me to fail this requirement. If I am unmarried by that date, the corporate board will legally vote to remove me as CEO, and Marcus will take total control of the company—and immediately use its vast resources to plunge this city into a bloody, destructive turf war."
"So you just decided to pick a random, desperate waitress off a nightclub floor?" I asked bitterly, crossing my arms.
"You are not a random waitress, Sloan," Roman corrected firmly. "You are Arthur Vance's daughter. You are a brilliant, educated architectural designer whose family was ruthlessly destroyed by corporate greed. You have zero ties to the syndicates, no political ambitions, and no desire to play manipulative games with my personal fortune. You are fundamentally honest. And more importantly... you have a burning, justified reason to want revenge against the exact same enemies I need to destroy."
He reached down into the fine leather briefcase resting on the floor between us and pulled out a thick, black leather-bound legal document, handing it across the console.
"What is this?" I asked, eyeing the papers suspiciously.
"A formal marriage contract," Roman answered evenly. "Read through the terms carefully."
I opened the folder under the soft reading light of the limousine interior. The terms written inside were utterly staggering:
Duration: The formal marriage contract would last exactly twelve months.
Financial Terms: Sloan Vance would receive a guaranteed monthly personal allowance of $100,000. All medical debts, care facility fees, and top-tier private neurological rehabilitation costs for Arthur Vance would be assumed permanently by the Costa estate.
Legal Support: Roman Costa’s personal team of elite criminal defense attorneys would immediately reopen the fraud case against Preston Hayes and Hayes Global, providing unlimited financial backing to clear Arthur Vance’s name and fully restore his stolen corporate assets.
Living Arrangements: Sloan Vance would move into the sprawling Costa Manor as Roman's recognized legal spouse. Completely separate private sleeping quarters would be provided on the west wing. Physical intimacy was strictly prohibited unless mutually and explicitly agreed upon.
Exit Strategy: At the conclusion of the twelve-month term, a quiet, uncontentious divorce would be arranged. Sloan would receive a guaranteed lump-sum financial settlement of ten million dollars and full, unencumbered ownership of Vance Construction.
My hands shook visibly as I read the words over and over. It sounded like an absolute fever dream born from a desperate mind. Ten million dollars? Complete medical care for my father? Getting my father's stolen legacy back from Preston?
"Why Preston?" I asked quietly, looking up from the pages into Roman's intense grey eyes. "Why do you care so much about destroying him?"
Roman's jaw tightened instantly, a razor-thin flash of dark, murderous hatred passing through his eyes. "Preston Hayes isn't acting as an independent operator. He is the primary financial laundering front for my uncle, Marcus Costa. The money Preston stole from your construction firm was funneled directly to fund Marcus's illegal international weapons shipments. Destroying Preston Hayes is the critical key to crippling my uncle once and for all."
He leaned back against the seat, steepling his fingers together. "So, Sloan Vance... you now have a monumental choice to make. You can walk right back to that nightclub tomorrow night, kneeling in broken glass, working yourself into an early grave while your father suffers in a substandard care facility. Or you can sign that contract, step into my world of power, and help me bring the men who destroyed your family completely to their knees."
I looked out the heavily tinted window at the heavy rain pouring down against the dark, unforgiving city streets. I thought of my father, lying helpless in his hospital bed, unable to speak, his eyes filled with silent heartbreak every time I visited him. I thought of Preston's cruel, mocking face as he deliberately dropped that glass of scotch onto my shoes.
I looked back down at the contract in my hands. I picked up the heavy gold fountain pen Roman offered me.
And I firmly signed my name at the bottom of the page.
"A very smart decision, carina," Roman murmured softly, retrieving the pen. "Welcome to the family, Mrs. Costa."
Ten minutes later, the Maybach limousine pulled up before a pair of massive, towering wrought-iron gates that parted slowly to reveal a long, winding private drive lined with ancient, weeping oak trees. At the summit of the private hill stood Costa Manor—a colossal, magnificent limestone mansion that looked far more like a European royal fortress than a private residential home.
As the car glided to a smooth stop beneath the grand limestone portico, an elderly butler dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo opened my door, bowing deeply from the waist.
"Welcome home, Mrs. Costa," the butler said respectfully.
I stepped out onto the polished marble driveway, my heart pounding in my chest. But as I took Roman's offered arm, I realized with absolute clarity that my life as a helpless victim had officially ended the moment I signed my name.
However, as we walked through the towering oak doors into the grand foyer—where towering marble pillars and cascading gold crystal chandeliers blinded the eye—I noticed a small group of people standing silently at the top of the sweeping grand staircase.
At the center stood an older man with silver hair, a heavy silver-headed cane, and eyes filled with pure, unadulterated poison. Marcus Costa. And standing directly beside him, holding a crystal flute of champagne, was a stunning, impeccably dressed woman in an emerald-green silk evening dress—Victoria Vance, Preston Hayes's ruthless corporate sister and Marcus's primary underworld operator.
Victoria looked down at me from the landing, her red lips curling into a vicious, mocking smile.
"So this is the little charity case Roman bought off the club floor," Victoria drawled, her voice echoing down the cavernous stairwell. "Tell me, darling... did you remember to wash the stench of cheap whiskey off your hands before you dared step foot onto our family's marble?"
Roman’s hand tightened reassuringly around mine, his low, dangerous voice brushing against my ear. "Rule number one of being my wife, Sloan... never back down from a jackal."
May you like
I lifted my chin proudly, looking directly into Victoria's cruel eyes.
"The whiskey is gone, Victoria," I said coldly, my voice ringing clear across the foyer. "And soon, everything your family stole from mine will be gone, too."
