Chapter 5 - The Empress of the City and the Final CrownThe executive boardroom on the eightieth floor of the towering Costa International Tower was a fortress built of reinforced glass, steel, and ruthless corporate ambition. The sweeping panoramic windows offered a breathtaking, unobstructed view of the city, perfectly bathed in the crisp, golden light of a brand-new dawn.

Seated around the massive oval mahogany table were twelve of the most powerful corporate board members in the country. At the head of the table sat Marcus Costa, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane, a look of smug, absolute victory plastered across his aging face. Seated right beside him was Victoria Hayes, frantically refreshing her phone, trying in absolute vain to contact her brother at the docks.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Marcus announced loudly, his voice echoing authoritatively through the silent room. "It is now precisely eight o'clock. As you are all well aware, my nephew Roman has failed to present himself or his legal spouse before our strict thirty-sixth birthday deadline. Furthermore, given his recent... chaotic underworld entanglements, I officially move for an immediate board vote to strip him of his executive control and appoint me as permanent Chairman of Costa International."
"I formally second the motion!" Victoria chimed in quickly, faking an expression of deep corporate concern. "It is truly unfortunate, but Roman has clearly proven himself entirely unfit to lead."
"Are you quite certain about that, Uncle?"
The heavy double oak doors of the boardroom slammed open with dramatic, earth-shaking power.
Every single board member gasped in unison, springing to their feet in utter shock.
Roman walked calmly into the room, looking completely immaculate in a tailored charcoal three-piece bespoke suit, his posture radiating unshakeable, terrifying power. And walking right beside him, holding his hand with supreme, unbreakable confidence, was me. I wore a striking, impeccably tailored ivory silk pantsuit with gold buttons, my head held high, looking every single bit the true empress of the Costa empire.
Marching directly behind us were four senior special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by Roman's chief corporate legal counsel.
Marcus Costa slammed his heavy silver cane against the polished floor, his face twisting into a furious, panicked mask. "Roman?! How... how are you even breathing right now?!"
"Disappointed to see me alive, Marcus?" Roman said smoothly, walking calmly to the head of the table and pulling out the center leather armchair for me before taking his own seat. "I deeply apologize for ruining your sunny morning, but my wife and I had some urgent federal business to attend to down at Pier 9."
Victoria’s face drained of every last trace of color. "Pier 9...?"
"Yes, Victoria," I spoke up clearly, my voice smooth, commanding, and totally dominant, carrying effortlessly across the grand room. "Your brother Preston was arrested two hours ago by federal agents. He has already signed a full, uncoerced confession implicating both you and Marcus Costa in thirty million dollars of wire fraud, corporate espionage, and attempted murder."
The FBI agents stepped forward immediately, holding up heavy steel handcuffs.
"Marcus Costa, Victoria Hayes," the lead federal agent announced sternly. "You are both under formal arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and corporate financial fraud. You have the right to remain silent."
"This is an outrage! You cannot do this to me! I am a Costa!" Marcus roared like a wounded animal, thrashing wildly as the federal agents grabbed his arms, locking the handcuffs firmly around his wrists.
Victoria burst into loud, hysterical tears of sheer despair as she was forcibly pulled away from the table, her golden social prestige shattering into dust right before the eyes of the city's elite.
As the disgraced conspirators were dragged out of the boardroom screaming in fury, the room descended into a stunned, respectful silence.
Roman stood up slowly from his chair, placing a thick leather legal binder onto the center of the mahogany table.
"As you can clearly see, gentlemen," Roman announced, looking around the table at the remaining board members who were now nodding in eager, total submission. "My marriage to Sloan Vance-Costa is fully registered, legal, and legally binding. Arthur Vance's name has been completely cleared by the Department of Justice, and Vance Construction's stolen assets have been fully restored to my wife's estate."
The lead board member immediately stood up, starting a round of applause. "Congratulations, Chairman Costa! The board hereby unanimously confirms your permanent appointment as Chief Executive Officer of Costa International!"
The entire room erupted into roaring applause.
Roman turned toward me, offering his open hand. Together, we walked away from the table, exited the boardroom, and stepped out onto the private top-floor balcony, looking out over the magnificent, glowing skyline of the city below.
The cool morning breeze carried away the final remnants of the storm. The city beneath us was bustling vibrantly with life, but up here on the eighty-second floor, the air was pure, quiet, and peaceful.
"It's finally over," I said softly, resting my hands against the stone balcony railing as I looked out over the horizon. "My father's name is completely clean. Preston and Marcus are heading to prison for the rest of their lives. Everything we fought for... we won."
Roman stepped up closely behind me, wrapping his large, strong arms securely around my waist, pulling my back gently against his broad chest. He rested his chin softly near my ear.
"Not everything, Sloan," Roman whispered, his deep voice thick with genuine, overwhelming emotion.
I turned around in his embrace, looking up directly into his dark slate-grey eyes. "What do you mean?"
Roman reached slowly into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out the original twelve-month marriage contract we had signed three weeks ago in the limousine. He looked down at the paper for a moment, and then looked back into my eyes.
And then, right before my eyes, Roman deliberately tore the ten-million-dollar marriage contract straight down the middle, letting the fluttering pieces blow away into the wind over the city skyline.
My breath caught sharply in my throat. "Roman... what are you doing?"
Roman took my face gently in his warm, powerful hands, his grey eyes shining with a raw, undeniable passion that completely melted my heart.
"I don't want a contract, Sloan," Roman said softly, his voice trembling slightly with authentic vulnerability. "I don't care about the board of directors, or the voting shares, or the business empire. I initially claimed you as my wife three weeks ago to save you from that nightclub floor... but in the end, you were the one who saved me from the darkness."
He leaned down slowly, his forehead resting gently against mine.
"I love you, Sloan Vance. Not as a fake partner, not as a legal asset in a business contract... but as my wife, my equal, my soulmate, and the only woman who holds my heart. I want you to stay with me—not for a temporary year, but for the rest of my life. Will you stay by my side?"
Tears of absolute, profound joy welled up in my eyes, spilling freely down my cheeks. The bitter pain of the past three years, the humiliation of the broken glass, the constant fear of the dark—all of it vanished completely beneath the infinite warmth of his love.
I smiled brightly, throwing my arms tightly around his neck.
"I'm not going anywhere, Roman," I whispered fiercely against his lips. "I'm staying right here. Forever with my husband."
Roman laughed—a rich, booming sound of pure, unadulterated happiness—and lifted me effortlessly up into his arms, spinning me around on the sunlit balcony before pulling me into a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed our eternal promise forever.
Six months later, Vance Construction was officially reopened under a brand-new, modern corporate headquarters designed entirely by its new Lead Executive Architect: Sloan Vance-Costa.

At the grand ribbon-cutting ceremony, my father stood proudly beside me, walking steadily with a polished wooden cane, tears of immense pride shining in his eyes as he spoke clearly to the press, praising his brilliant daughter and her fiercely devoted husband.
And as I stood on the top floor of our new skyscraper, holding Roman's hand tightly as our matching diamond rings caught the bright afternoon sun, I knew with absolute certainty that no matter how low life tries to force you down... true love, unyielding strength, and fierce resilience will always lift you up to reign supreme.
