Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the Harbor and the Dash for SurvivalThe glittering ballroom exploded into absolute, chaotic pandemonium.

High-society guests shrieked in terror and scattered wildly as three heavily armed men wearing dark tactical ski masks burst through the private service doors of the Plaza Hotel, spraying warning rounds of automatic gunfire directly into the ornate gilded ceiling. Heavy chunks of plaster rained down onto the panic-stricken crowd like white snow.

"Everybody down! Get on the floor right now!" one of the masked gunmen roared, leveling an assault rifle at the fleeing crowd.

Before my brain could even fully process the unfolding horror, Roman moved with terrifying, blinding speed. He grabbed my waist, yanked me forcefully behind a massive marble structural pillar, and instantly drew a sleek black handgun from his custom leather shoulder holster hidden inside his tuxedo jacket.

"Roman!" I gasped, clutching frantically at his tuxedo sleeve.

"Stay directly behind me, Sloan. Do not move an inch from this pillar," Roman commanded, his voice deathly calm, his grey eyes turning completely to ice.

Across the chaotic, screaming room, I caught a sharp glimpse of Marcus Costa and Victoria Hayes being swiftly escorted away through a secure private emergency exit by their personal armed bodyguards. Marcus didn't look terrified in the least—he looked smug and triumphant. He turned his head back for a brief fraction of a second, locking eyes with Roman across the room, and flashed a dark, knowing grin.

It was an engineered ambush. Marcus had orchestrated the violent attack to eliminate Roman right before Monday's critical board vote, intending to make it look like a tragic, random gangland robbery gone wrong.

"They aren't here for money or jewelry," I whispered urgently, terror gripping my throat as the dark puzzle pieces fell into place. "Marcus set this whole thing up!"

"I know," Roman said grimly, his jaw tight. "Which means my outer perimeter team has already been intercepted."

Suddenly, heavy tactical footsteps rounded the marble pillar. One of the masked gunmen spotted us and pointed his assault rifle straight at Roman's chest. "Found him! The boss is—"

BANG!

Roman fired a single, perfectly aimed shot before the man could finish his warning. The gunman collapsed instantly onto the marble floor. Roman grabbed my wrist, pulling me with terrifying speed toward the hotel's rear kitchen corridors, firing two rapid shots to clear the hallway as terrified kitchen staff screamed and dove for cover behind stainless-steel counters.

We burst through the heavy metal back exit doors directly into the freezing, relentless rain of the alleyway. A black armored SUV with tinted windows was idling by the curb. Roman's loyal head of security, Leo, kicked open the rear door from inside, blood streaming down his temple from a graze wound.

"Boss! Get in! They've breached the outer courtyard—we have to move to the reinforced safe house at the docks immediately!" Leo yelled over the deafening roar of the storm.

Roman shoved me into the back seat, leaping in right behind me as the heavy SUV slammed its tires into motion, roaring down the rain-slicked alley just as a volley of heavy rifle bullets slammed violently against the reinforced rear bulletproof glass.

My heart hammered furiously against my ribs. I looked over at Roman, whose white shirt was stained with dark rain and gunpowder residue. He calmly checked his firearm magazine, his hands remarkably steady, his face set in absolute stone.

"Are you hit?" he asked quickly, turning his fierce gaze toward me to inspect my arms and shoulders.

"No... no, I'm completely fine," I panted, wiping cold rain from my forehead. "What about you?"

"I'm untouched," Roman replied softly, reaching out to gently tuck a wet strand of dark hair behind my ear. His touch was astonishingly gentle despite the violent chaos surrounding us. "I promised you I would keep you safe, Sloan. I intend to keep that vow."

Twenty minutes later, the armored SUV careened into a dark, heavily secluded industrial shipping yard at the city harbor. Row after row of massive steel shipping containers loomed in the absolute darkness like iron giants, battered relentlessly by howling ocean winds. The safe house was a fortified, highly inconspicuous concrete warehouse located at the edge of Pier 14.

We rushed inside the reinforced building. Heavy steel security doors slid shut behind us instantly, locking with deep, mechanical thuds that vibrated through the floorboards.

Inside, the warehouse was a high-tech tactical command center filled with glowing digital monitors, heavy weapons racks, and encrypted communication gear. Leo immediately rushed to the computer banks, wiping blood from his eyebrow as he frantically hammered away at the keyboards.

"Boss," Leo said, his voice grim and tense. "Marcus just called an emergency online meeting of the board for eight o'clock tomorrow morning. He's actively claiming you fled the city following an underworld assassination attempt... and he's motioning to declare you permanently unfit to lead Costa International."

"He's moving even faster than I anticipated," Roman muttered, pacing across the polished concrete floor like a caged panther. "He knows if I walk into that boardroom with Sloan tomorrow morning, he loses everything."

"There's more, sir," Leo added nervously, staring up at the flashing monitor. "Preston Hayes just accessed the main central servers at Hayes Global. He's actively transferring all remaining offshore capital into Marcus's private Zurich accounts right this second. If that massive transfer completes by midnight... Marcus will have enough liquid funds to buy off three swing-vote board members before sunrise."

"Where is Preston right now?" I demanded suddenly, stepping forward from the shadows, my eyes locking onto the glowing terminal screens.

Leo blinked in surprise, looking up at me. "He's operating out of the dockside administrative warehouse just three blocks from here—Pier 9. He's using Marcus's secure private server tunnel to execute the transfer."

I turned my fierce gaze directly to Roman. "We can stop him. Right now."

Roman frowned, stepping close to block my path. "No, Sloan. It's far too dangerous. Marcus has heavily armed mercenary units guarding Pier 9. You need to stay right here where it's secure."

"Preston destroyed my entire family using those exact same servers!" I insisted, my voice rising with an unyielding, passionate determination. "He forged my father's credentials! I know his private system overrides better than anyone else because I watched him set up his security encryption back when we were engaged! If you just send your men in to blow up the building, the digital evidence required to clear my father’s name forever will be destroyed in the fire!"

Roman stared at me for a long, heavy moment, his intense grey eyes searching deep into mine. He saw no fear or hesitation in my expression—only unyielding steel.

A slow, proud, incredibly fond smile touched the corners of his lips. "You really are an extraordinary woman, do you know that?"

Roman turned immediately to Leo. "Gear up the tactical team. We're taking Pier 9."

Ten minutes later, under the cover of roaring ocean thunder and torrential rain, we breached the side security entrance of Pier 9. Roman and his tactical operatives moved like silent phantoms, seamlessly neutralizing Marcus's guards in the dark shadows between towering metal cargo crates.

I followed closely right behind Roman, wearing a heavy black tactical vest over my crimson dress, my veins pumping with pure, surging adrenaline.

We reached the glass-walled upper office overlooking the vast, echoing shipping bay below.

Inside sat Preston Hayes, frantically typing away on a glowing blue laptop, surrounded by piles of physical cash and forged passports.

Roman kicked open the heavy office door with a deafening CRASH!

Preston shrieked in absolute terror, knocking his executive chair backward as he scrambled desperately against the office wall, clutching a small automatic handgun with violently shaking hands. "S-stay back! Stay away from me, Roman!"

Roman didn't even blink an eye. He walked slowly, steadily into the room, kicking the firearm out of Preston's hand with blinding speed. Preston crumpled instantly to the floor, sobbing hysterically like a child.

"Please! Please don't kill me!" Preston whimpered, holding his palms up toward us in total despair. "Marcus forced me into it! He threatened to put a bullet in my head if I didn't frame Arthur Vance!"

I stepped past Roman, walking right up to where Preston cowered on the floor. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with pathetic desperation.

"Sloan... Sloan, baby, please!" Preston begged, crawling forward toward my boots. "You loved me once! Tell him to let me go! I'll give you half the stolen money! We can start a brand new life together!"

I looked down at the pathetic wreck of a man—the very person who had forced me to kneel in broken glass just three weeks ago, who had stolen my father's health and dignity, and who had thought he was invincible.

"I wouldn't cross a burning street to save your life, Preston," I said coldly, my voice devoid of any pity.

I leaned down, grabbed the glowing laptop from the wooden desk, and plugged in the encrypted flash drive Roman handed me. My fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing Preston's custom security codes within forty seconds.

"File transfer successfully cancelled," the computer interface announced in a calm digital chime. "Master recovery file downloaded. All original forged documents recovered."

Preston gasped, absolute ruin crashing over him like a tidal wave. "No... no, no, no! You can't do this!"

"It's finally over, Preston," I whispered softly, looking down at him with utter disgust. "My father's name is completely cleared. And you are going to federal prison for the rest of your natural life."

Outside, heavy sirens suddenly wailed through the storm—police cruisers and federal marshals summoned directly by Roman's legal team were swarming the harbor.

Roman wrapped his arm securely around my shoulder, pulling me close against his side as we walked out of the office, leaving Preston weeping uncontrollably on the floor surrounded by federal evidence.

As we stepped back out into the cool, rain-washed night air, Roman looked down at me, his slate-grey eyes shining in the darkness.

"You were brilliant tonight, Mrs. Costa," he murmured with profound respect.

"We make an unbeatable team, Mr. Costa," I replied, smiling up at him through the rain.

He paused beneath the warm halo of a streetlamp, reaching out to cup my cheek, his thumb gently wiping away a stray raindrop from my cheekbone. "It's almost sunrise, Sloan. In three hours, the board meeting begins. And then... our final victory is complete."

I leaned instinctively into his warm palm, realizing with an overwhelming wave of certainty that somewhere along this terrifying, violent journey... I had fallen completely and irrevocably in love with the devil himself.
