Chapter 3 - The Wolves at the Gala and the Crimson DressThree weeks had passed since the rainy night I signed the contract that fundamentally reshaped my existence.

In those twenty-one fast-paced days, my entire universe was completely transformed. Roman kept every single promise with ruthless efficiency. My father was quietly and securely transferred from the bleak room at Saint Jude’s to the elite Harbor View Neurological Institute—an ultra-private medical facility perched dramatically on a cliff overlooking the ocean. He was assigned two full-time specialized physical therapists, a leading neurosurgeon, and a private luxury suite that resembled a five-star hotel. Within two weeks of intensive, high-end therapy, my father uttered his very first complete, coherent sentence in three years.

When I sat by his bedside and gently showed him my new diamond ring, tears of profound relief rolled down his weathered cheeks. I told him he was safe at last, and that the monsters who destroyed our lives were finally going to pay for their crimes.

Meanwhile, Roman’s team of elite stylists, speech coaches, and security advisors spent three weeks turning me from a broken, exhausted survivor into a woman of immense poise and presence. The worn canvas shoes and faded waitress dresses were replaced by custom French couture gowns, rare diamonds, and shoes carved from supple Italian leather. But far beyond the physical transformation, Roman taught me how to walk into a room filled with apex predators and make them bow their heads.

Tonight was the ultimate, public test of my new identity: The Annual Metropolitan Charity Gala.

It was easily the biggest, most prestigious high-society event of the entire year, attended exclusively by the city's billionaires, corrupt politicians, and high-ranking syndicate bosses. It was also the exact night Roman would formally introduce me to the board of directors of Costa International Holdings—and to high society at large.

I stood standing before the towering floor-to-ceiling mirror in the master suite dressing room. I wore a breathtaking, floor-length crimson silk gown that hugged my frame flawlessly, featuring a dramatic low-cut back and a sweeping, elegant train. Resting securely around my neck hung the legendary Costa Star—a seventy-carat rare black diamond pendant necklace that had once belonged to Roman's late grandmother. My dark hair was styled in flawless, cascading Hollywood waves, and my lips were painted a bold, uncompromising shade of crimson.

A sharp, respectful knock sounded at the heavy mahogany door, and Roman walked into the suite. He wore a crisp, midnight-blue bespoke tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding physical presence.

He stopped dead in his tracks the exact second he laid eyes on me, his grey eyes darkening with an intense emotion that sent a sudden spike of electricity straight through my veins.

"You look... extraordinary, Sloan," Roman said quietly, his deep voice carrying an unfamiliar, raw warmth.

"I don't feel like myself at all," I admitted softly, looking at my reflection in the glass. "I feel like an actress standing backstage before a very dangerous play."

Roman walked up slowly behind me, reaching out to gently adjust the heavy black diamond necklace resting against my collarbone. His warm fingers brushed lightly against my skin, sending a violent shiver down my spine.

"This is not a play, Sloan. It's a real battlefield," Roman whispered near my ear, his intense grey eyes meeting mine in the reflection of the glass. "Marcus and Victoria will try to tear you down tonight by any means necessary. They will try to prove our marriage is a complete fraud. They will test your blood. Do not let them see you flinch for even a second."

"I won't," I replied fiercely, turning my head slightly. "I spent three years being broken by those people. I am completely done flinching."

Roman smiled—a rare, devastatingly genuine smile that transformed his ruthless face into something dangerously handsome. "That's my girl. Let's go make history."

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a blinding sea of glittering tuxedos, shimmering silk gowns, and echoing laughter. Expensive champagne flowed endlessly from towering ice sculptures, and a forty-piece classical orchestra played softly in the background.

The exact moment Roman and I stepped down the sweeping grand marble staircase arm-in-arm, the ambient chatter in the vast room instantly died down. Flashbulbs exploded like blinding flashes of lightning as press photographers scrambled frantically to capture the very first public appearance of Roman Costa and his mysterious new bride.

"Look straight ahead, keep your head high, smile, and keep walking," Roman murmured softly beside me.

We glided gracefully into the center of the glittering room, smoothly navigating past wealthy corporate executives who bowed their heads in deep, instantaneous respect to Roman. But the illusion of peaceful grandeur was destined to be short-lived.

"Well, well, well. Look who decided to drag the king and his newly purchased queen into the light."

Marcus Costa stepped directly into our path, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane. Standing directly beside him was Victoria Hayes, looking radiant yet predatory in a metallic gold sequin dress, accompanied by a pale, sweating Preston Hayes.

My blood ran cold for a fraction of a second, but I locked down my emotions and held my composure.

Preston looked utterly wretched. The confident, sleek, arrogant playboy from the Obsidian Club was completely gone. His eyes were bloodshot, his skin sickly pale, and his hands trembled uncontrollably as he held a flute of champagne. Roman’s relentless financial pressure over the past three weeks had crushed thirty percent of Hayes Global’s stock value, leaving Preston teetering frantically on the absolute brink of total personal bankruptcy.

"Uncle Marcus," Roman said calmly, his hand firmly holding my waist. "I see you brought your favorite stray dogs along with you tonight."

Marcus’s eyes flared with undisguised rage, but he forced a cold, sickening grin across his wrinkled face. "Careful with your words, nephew. I am still the senior patriarch of this family. And I must say, I was thoroughly entertained when I heard trustworthy reports that you picked up Arthur Vance's penniless, disgraced daughter straight off a nightclub floor just to save your board voting seats."

Victoria stepped forward aggressively, her eyes scanning my seventy-carat black diamond necklace with intense, burning jealousy. "It's genuinely pathetic, Roman. Did you really think passing off a former waitress as a true Costa matriarch would fool the board of directors? She doesn't belong in this room. Everyone here knows her father is a criminal fraud and her family is absolute trash."

The surrounding high-society guests started leaning in eagerly, whispering behind their gloved hands and champagne flutes.

I felt Roman’s muscles tense tightly beneath his suit jacket, ready to unleash absolute destruction upon her, but I gently squeezed his arm, stepping forward independently.

"A criminal fraud, Victoria?" I asked smoothly, my voice calm, loud, and crystal clear, easily carrying over the surrounding murmurs of the crowd. "That's a rather rich accusation coming from you. Tell me, how is the ongoing Federal Tax Investigation going into Hayes Global's secret offshore accounts tucked away in the Cayman Islands?"

Victoria’s confident, vicious smile instantly froze solid on her face. Preston’s champagne glass rattled violently against his knuckles.

"What on earth are you talking about?" Victoria hissed quietly, her voice tightening with panic.

"Oh, did nobody inform you?" I feigned innocent surprise, taking one slow, deliberate step toward her across the marble floor. "Three days ago, the United States Department of Justice received a complete, unredacted forensic audit of Vance Construction's former accounts. It turns out the forged signatures your brother used to steal the company were backed by computer IP addresses originating directly from your personal office laptop, Victoria."

Preston went completely, deathly pale, whipping his head around to stare at his sister in sheer terror. "Victoria... you swore to me those office servers had been completely wiped!"

"Shut your stupid mouth, Preston!" Victoria snapped instantly, her face turning a bright, furious shade of crimson.

Marcus Costa’s jaw clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might crack as he realized the catastrophic depth of the trap. He shot a murderous glare at Preston, then snapped his eyes back toward Roman.

"You think you're clever, don't you, boy?" Marcus growled, leaning heavily on his cane as he stepped close. "You think bringing this little girl into your bed will secure your majority vote on Monday morning? The board will never confirm a marriage built on an obvious lie. We know this is a fabricated arrangement. We know you don't even share a bedroom!"

The tension in the air became thick, sharp, and suffocating.

Roman did not panic. Instead, he chuckled softly—a low, deeply terrifying sound that sent shivers through the crowd. He wrapped his arm tightly around my waist, pulling my body flush against his chest.

Before anyone could react, Roman turned me smoothly in his arms, cupped my face gently in his large, warm hands, and leaned down, pressing his lips firmly against mine.

It was not a fake, staged peck for the cameras. It was a deep, possessive, breathtakingly intense kiss that sent a massive shockwave straight through my entire body. My fingers automatically found their way into the hair at the nape of his neck as I kissed him back with equal fervor, completely lost in the electric heat surging between us.

When he finally pulled back slowly, his slate-grey eyes were dark with an emotional intensity that made my heart race wildly.

Roman turned his head slightly toward Marcus, his voice dark, calm, and dripping with absolute satisfaction.

"Does that look like a fabricated lie to you, Uncle?" Roman asked smoothly. "Because if you or anyone else ever insults my wife again... I won't just take your voting shares. I will take everything you have left in this world."

Marcus stared at us in absolute, furious silence, unable to formulate a single word. Victoria gripped the fabric of her gold dress so hard the silk threatened to rip, while Preston looked like he was about to collapse onto the velvet carpet.

Without waiting for another word of reply, Roman took my hand, turning his back on them as he led me toward the center of the glittering dance floor. The orchestra struck up a slow, beautiful, sweeping waltz.

As Roman pulled me into his arms, moving effortlessly across the floor while the cameras flashed around us, I looked up into his intense eyes, my heart hammering.

"That... was quite an impressive performance," I whispered softly, trying to catch my breath.

Roman held my gaze, his hand resting warm and firm against my lower back as he spun me gracefully.

May you like

"Who ever said it was a performance, Sloan?" he murmured quietly.

My breath hitched in my throat. But before I could process the heavy implication of his words, a loud, violent glass crash echoed suddenly from the far side of the ballroom—instantly followed by a chilling, blood-curdling scream.
