Chapter 4 - MY PLACE AT THE WEDDING

I was not a bridesmaid.
Thank God.
Dorothy asked.
I refused kindly because I was thirty-four weeks pregnant and did not want to stand through a ceremony.
She accepted.
Then created another role.
“Family witness.”
No legal meaning.
I would walk into the ballroom with Ethan before the processional and sit in the front row.
Fine.
Then she asked whether I would wear pale silver instead of dark blue because silver photographed better beside her dress.
I bought silver.
Then she asked whether Dad could enter separately from us because she did not want “that bodyguard parade” during family photographs.
Reasonable.
Dad agreed.
Then she asked whether I might skip the receiving line.
I said yes.
Then:
Could I rest in the bridal changing room for ten minutes before the ceremony so I would not become overheated?
I said no.
“I don’t need to rest.”
“It would help you.”
“I’m fine.”
“You were in the hospital two weeks ago.”
“And released.”
She looked at Ethan.
I saw it.
That small glance couples miss when they want peace.
I said:
“Don’t recruit him.”
Dorothy smiled.
“No recruitment.”
Ethan said:
“Bella, if you feel tired, use the room.”
“If I feel tired, I will.”
“Fine.”

The discussion ended.
Or I thought it did.
