Chapter 6 - ETHAN’S FIRST LIE

At the hospital Ethan sent me a message.
I did not read it until morning.
I didn’t know she locked the door.
True.
Then:
I didn’t know there was any plan to keep you away from the ceremony.
False.
I knew that before police did.
The photographer’s assistant found revised schedule cards after hotel staff began preserving materials.
One line:
IF ISABELLA EXPERIENCES DISCOMFORT 30 MINUTES PRE-CEREMONY:
WEST BRIDAL ROOM.
WATER / CHAIR.
ETHAN CHECKS AFTER RECESSIONAL UNLESS MEDICAL STAFF REQUESTS EARLIER.
My name.
After recessional.
Eighteen minutes.
Maybe thirty if processional started late.
Who wrote it?
Wedding coordinator, based on instructions from Dorothy.
Who approved?
Ethan replied by email:
Looks fine. She’ll probably refuse the room, so don’t make a thing of it.
That was not locking.
Not physical restraint.
Still a plan to route me away.
Then Dorothy responded privately to him:
If she starts contracting, Massimo cannot know until vows are done. He will stop the entire room.
Ethan:
Mom, if she is actually in labor we are leaving.
Good.
Dorothy:
I said contracting, not labor. She has been doing that for weeks.
Ethan:
Fine. Just no drama.
There.
No drama.
One of the most destructive phrases in families.
May you like
It often means:
Do not make me feel what is happening.
