Chapter 14 - THE FIRST UNSUPERVISED HOUR

It took nine months before my son had one unsupervised hour with his mother.
No stepfather present.
Neutral apartment.
Daylight.
Dr. Hayes prepared him.
He asked:
“Door locks?”
“Regular front-door lock.”
“Shed?”
“No shed.”
“Can call Daddy?”
“Yes.”
Important.
The phone remained.
Not as weapon against her.
As safety.
I waited in a coffee shop six minutes away.
Every part of me wanted to stay in the hallway.
I did not.
At the end of the hour my son came out carrying a drawing.
“Mom made pancakes.”
“Good?”
“Burnt.”
His mother laughed weakly.
May you like
Normal.
That was the first day she became his mother again instead of the woman in the doorway.
