Chapter 22 - THE EMERGENCY PHONE IN THE DRAWER

At sixteen, my son found the tiny phone in my office drawer.
Dead battery.
Cracked case.
One-button interface.
He laughed.
“That thing saved me.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why keep it?”
I almost gave the sentimental answer.
Memory.
Proof.
Then I realized that would turn fear into relic.
“I forgot it was there.”
Mostly true.
He asked:
“Can I have it?”
“Yes.”
He took it apart later for an electronics project.
The phone stopped being evidence.

Became parts.
Good.
