Chapter 5 - MY FAMILY MAKES EVERYTHING WORSE

My family heard about the shed.

Of course.

Within twenty-four hours, three uncles wanted names.

One cousin wanted the stepfather’s employer.

An older aunt said:

“Send two men to his house and see how brave he is without a child.”

No.

This was exactly why I had spent years separating our legitimate family structure from old Mafia reflexes.

My father’s generation had believed a family handled insult privately because involving outsiders meant surrendering control.

I had learned the opposite.

When your emotions are strongest, outside process becomes most valuable.

I called a family meeting.

Not a council.

No weapons.

No threats.

One rule:

Nobody contacts my son’s mother, her husband, their employers, relatives, neighbors, school, or legal team.

One uncle asked:

“What if he comes around?”

“Security handles it.”

“What if he insults you?”

“I survive.”

“What if—”

“No.”

My father, seventy-one and still capable of making a quiet room nervous, watched me.

Then:

“You’re protecting him?”

“No. I’m protecting my son’s case from idiots.”

That worked.

Old Mafia men respect legal strategy more when you insult them personally.

Then my father said something uncomfortable.

“What if she’s right about you?”

I stared.

“About what?”

“You make leaving you hard.”

That hurt because it contained truth.

I had built my life so my son felt safe with me.

Good.

I also had more resources.

Larger home.

Household staff.

Flexible schedule because I ran my companies through executives.

Grandparents nearby.

Security.

My son’s mother had a smaller ordinary house and a husband who worked fixed hours.

When the child said he wanted Daddy’s house, was he choosing me or environment?

Both perhaps.

Then my father said:

“Don’t turn his attachment into your innocence.”

I hated him for twenty minutes.

Then thanked him.

The mother and stepfather had done something wrong.

That did not prove I had done everything right.

Different questions.

Both needed answers.
