Chapter 14 - VICTORIA TAKES OFF HER VEIL

Victoria postponed her honeymoon by three days.
Not because I asked.
Because police needed statements and she refused to leave while her mother was under investigation.
She came to my office.
No wedding gown.
Jeans.
Hair tied back.
She placed a folder on my desk.
“What?”
“Mom’s planning notes.”
“Did you search her things?”
“No. She shared the wedding drive with me.”
Good.
No illegal family evidence raid.
Inside:
Seating.
Flowers.
Food.
Then:
CHILD GUEST MANAGEMENT.
Grace:
Seat near exit.
Safe meal delivered before main table if possible.
If food issue occurs, remove her quietly rather than stopping service.
I looked up.
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“I never approved that.”
“Who wrote it?”
“Mom.”
Then another note:
If Grace becomes upset, Allison should take her to hotel suite.
Emiliano tends to escalate.
I almost laughed.
Accurate about me.
Used wrongly.
Victoria said:
“She told me Grace gets anxious at food service.”
“She gets cautious.”
“I know now.”
“Did you know about the engagement dinner?”
“Only that Grace reacted.”
“Did your mother tell you Grace took someone else’s dessert?”
“Yes.”
“Did you believe her?”
“Yes.”
No accusation.
Why would Victoria suspect her mother had altered a child’s allergen plate?
Then:
“Mom asked me not to seat Grace near the head table.”
“Why?”
“She said wedding photos would look strange if staff kept bringing covered food.”
I stared.
“That was why?”
“Partly.”
Victoria cried.
“I moved her closer because I wanted her with cousins.”
Good.
Celeste’s daughter had quietly defeated one part of the plan without knowing it.
Then Victoria said:
“Please don’t punish my marriage for her.”
I understood immediately.
No contract cancellations.
No freezing relatives out.
No making her husband choose sides.
“I won’t.”
She nodded.
“Thank you.”

Her mother’s conduct belonged to her mother.
That sounds obvious until families turn guilt into inheritance.
