Chapter 22 - THE PURPLE MARKER

The most important physical evidence was a tiny purple sticker under a plate photographed ten months earlier.

The hospital had no reason to care.

The hotel did.

After the allergic reaction, security photographed the table before clearing because the insurer instructed preservation.

Grace’s dessert plate sat there.

Purple marker under rim.

Same plate assigned to safe meal.

Defense argued:

If marker remained, staff followed allergy system and Grace must have eaten something else.

Then Mark testified.

He had swapped the dessert cup while leaving the plate.

Exactly.

The marker became evidence against the original assumption.

Sienna testified next.

She explained the system.

Safe plate assembled separately.

Dessert cup placed onto marked plate.

Covered.

She left it.

Returned after emergency began.

“What did you assume?”

“That Grace had eaten another item or there had been cross-contact.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw the marked plate.”

“Did you know the cup had been changed?”

“No.”

Then prosecutor produced Celeste’s email.

Use the regular chocolate mousse but remove the pistachio garnish.

Sienna’s expression tightened even though she had seen it before.

“Would removing garnish make it safe?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Pistachio paste was in mousse base.”

“Was Celeste told?”

“Yes.”

Manager email.

Black and white.

The defense could argue misunderstanding.

Could not erase the sentence.
