Chapter 1 - The Frost on the Terrace

The Moretti mansion glittered with massive crystal chandeliers, towering fir trees wrapped in silk ribbon, and the fake, polished warmth of high-society Christmas celebrations. Outside, New York State was rapidly disappearing beneath a savage, record-breaking blizzard that howled against the reinforced glass windows.
My name is Elara Vance. I am twenty-seven years old, and that Christmas Eve, I nearly died because another woman couldn't stand the way her billionaire fiancé looked at me when he thought nobody was paying attention.
Inside the grand dining room, twelve of the most powerful and dangerous men on the Eastern Seaboard sat around a mahogany table, sipping hundred-year-old cognac and discussing the maritime shipping routes that fueled their empires. I moved silently behind their high-backed chairs, dressed in my crisp white-and-navy maid’s uniform, refilling crystal glasses and making sure I remained as invisible as possible.
Then Camila Rossi deliberately dropped her heavy silver napkin ring.
It rolled across the polished parquet floor, stopping right at my polished black shoes. I immediately knelt to retrieve it, keeping my chin tucked low in respect. But as I reached for the silver trinket, Camila leaned down, her expensive floral perfume mixing sickly with the smell of roasted meats, and whispered directly into my ear.
“I’ve seen Lorenzo watching you,” she hissed, her voice dripping with venom. “Don't mistake his curiosity for affection. You’re nothing but hired help. A beggar in a clean apron.”
I lowered my eyes, my throat tightening, refusing to give her the reaction she wanted. “I am just doing my job, Miss Rossi.”
Then she offered a sweet, murderous smile that made the skin on my arms prickle. She reached up to her left ear, casually unhooked a massive, five-carat teardrop diamond earring, and slipped it into the palm of her hand before opening her fingers over the floor.
“Oh dear,” Camila announced loudly, her voice cutting through the men's conversation. “I’ve lost my diamond earring. It must have fallen off when I stepped outside earlier. Somewhere on the west terrace. Go find it, Elara.”
I froze, glancing toward the tall French doors leading out to the west terrace. Beyond the glass, the blizzard was raging violently, turning the darkness into an impenetrable wall of white.
“Ma'am, the storm is severe,” I whispered, panic rising in my chest. “Perhaps I could search for it tomorrow morning when the sun comes up?”
Camila’s fake smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating glare. “Unless, of course, you’d prefer I report you to Lorenzo for stealing it? I’m sure he’d love to know his house maid is a thief.”
My stomach tightened into a hard, painful knot.
I couldn't lose this job. My father had passed away six months ago, leaving behind a mountain of crushing gambling debts, and the ruthless loan sharks he owed were still hunting for payment. The high wage Lorenzo Moretti paid his household staff was the only thing keeping my younger brother safe in school and keeping those dangerous men away from our door.
So, I obeyed.
I didn't have time to grab my winter coat from the staff quarters in the basement. Wearing only my cotton uniform, thin stockings, and a light woolen shoulder shawl, I pushed open the heavy brass latch of the terrace door and stepped outside into the abyss.
The arctic wind stole my breath instantly, hitting my face like a slap of broken glass.
The cold was unimaginable. Within seconds, the snow rose past my ankles, soaking through my thin leather shoes. I dropped to my knees on the frozen stone floor of the terrace, digging through the blinding white drifts with my bare fingers, searching for a glittering diamond that I knew deep in my heart wasn't even there.
My hands stopped hurting after five minutes. First came a burning, agonizing sting, and then a strange, hollow numbness that crept up my wrists and into my arms.
Then a violent gust of wind ripped my thin shawl off my shoulders, blowing it out into the dark pine forest beyond the estate.
I panicked. I turned back toward the mansion, but the blinding snow was so thick that the warm, glowing lights of the grand windows had completely vanished into a swirling, roaring white darkness.
I began to crawl desperately on hands and knees, reaching through the freezing drifts, begging my numb body to find the glass doors.
Instead, my bare, frostbitten hand struck a icy, sharp stone railing.
I had crawled in the wrong direction. I was at the outer edge of the elevated terrace, surrounded by a sheer drop into the frozen woods below.
I sank into the snowbank against the stone wall. Strangely, the shivering stopped. The terrifying, biting cold began to fade away, replaced by a soft, weightless warmth that spread gently through my chest.
Just one minute, I told myself as my eyelids grew impossibly heavy. I'll just rest my eyes for one minute...
Inside the warm, opulent dining hall, Lorenzo Moretti finally looked up from his leather-bound ledger and noticed my empty place near the silver sideboard.
Lorenzo was thirty-two years old—a man feared across the entire crime syndicate for his cold, surgical intelligence and ruthless authority. He was engaged to Camila Rossi not out of love, but because their marriage was designed to merge two massive shipping routes along the Atlantic coast. It was a transaction. An alliance between two criminal dynasties.
“Where is Elara?” Lorenzo demanded, his sharp, dark eyes scanning the room.
Camila casually picked up her crystal glass, taking a delicate sip of red wine. “Outside. Looking for my diamond earring. I dropped it on the terrace.”
Lorenzo’s dark brows drew together in a sharp line. “How long ago?”
“Oh, I don't know,” Camila replied with a dismissive wave of her hand. “Half an hour? Forty minutes? She’s taking quite a long time for a simple task.”
Stefano, Lorenzo’s head of security, instantly checked the digital weather terminal near the door. His face went pale. “Boss... the temperature outside just plunged to minus eight degrees. The wind chill is near minus twenty.”
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the dining room.
CRASH!
Lorenzo’s heavy carved chair crashed backward onto the marble floor as he stood up. In a single, fluid motion, he bypassed his security guards, shoved past his astonished guests, and threw open the heavy doors leading out to the howling blizzard.
He didn't grab a coat. He didn't grab boots.
He plunged directly into the blinding white hell of the storm, screaming my name over the roar of the gale.
I never heard him screaming. I never felt his powerful hands desperately digging through two feet of packed snow to pull my stiff, freezing body out from beneath the drift near the stone railing.
But somewhere in the hazy, terrifying borderland between darkness and death, I felt strong, warm arms lifting me against a broad chest. I heard the frantic, ragged beating of his heart against my ear, and I heard a sound I had never heard in my life—Lorenzo Moretti’s terrifying, ice-cold voice completely breaking with raw, unadulterated terror.
“Please, Elara... open your eyes,” he sobbed into my frozen hair, holding me tightly against his body as he ran back toward the house. “Please, baby... don't leave me.”
He kicked open the heavy glass doors of the terrace, bursting back into the warm, bright dining room, soaked in snow, carrying my pale, lifeless body wrapped securely inside his expensive cashmere suit jacket.
The twelve mob bosses gasped, rising from their seats in shock.
Camila stood near the fireplace, staring at the dirty, melting snow dripping from my hair onto the pristine white Persian rug beneath Lorenzo’s boots.
“Lorenzo!” Camila shrieked, her face contorted in disgust. “Look at what she’s doing to the rug! Put her on the floor! She’s ruining the party!”
When nobody answered her, Camila let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Why are you making such a scene over her? She’s just a maid.”
The entire dining room fell into an absolute, deathly quiet.
Lorenzo stopped walking.
He didn't turn around right away. He stood in the center of the grand hall, holding me tightly against his chest, his broad shoulders rising and falling in heavy, ragged breaths. When he finally looked up, his dark eyes were so filled with a cold, murderous fury that even the seasoned syndicate bosses shrank back from his gaze.
“Stefano,” Lorenzo commanded, his voice unnaturally, terrifyingly calm. “Lock every single door in this house.”
Stefano didn't hesitate. “Boss?”
“Nobody leaves this house tonight,” Lorenzo declared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings like a death sentence.
Camila’s arrogant, mocking smile vanished instantly. “Lorenzo... what are you talking about? It’s Christmas Eve!”
Lorenzo looked directly at his fiancée, his eyes black as judgment. “Especially my fiancée.”
May you like
And as I lay in his arms, shivering violently as the agonizing warmth returned to my frozen skin, I heard Lorenzo lean down and whisper against my forehead—a promise that terrified me far more than the blizzard outside.
“Tonight, Camila learns what happens when someone touches what belongs to me.”
