Chapter 3 - The Cold War on the Docks

The cancellation of the Rossi-Moretti merger sent shockwaves through the entire East Coast underworld within twenty-four hours.
By Christmas morning, news had leaked to the syndicate councils that Antonio Rossi’s empire was facing total financial annihilation. Stripped of the Moretti organization's massive security network and maritime access codes, Rossi’s shipping containers were being seized by federal port authorities and rival cartels alike.
Desperate, ruined, and driven mad by greed, Antonio Rossi and his daughter chose to do the unthinkable: they launched a desperate, suicidal war against the Moretti family.
Two days after Christmas, I sat in Lorenzo’s private sunlit office on the second floor of the mansion, wrapped in a plush cashmere sweater. My hands were still wrapped in soft medical bandages, but the color and feeling had fully returned to my fingers.
Lorenzo sat behind his broad mahogany desk, reviewing tactical reports with Stefano.
“Rossi has hired thirty private mercenaries from the Vance cartel in South America,” Stefano reported grimly, laying out a satellite map of the Brooklyn shipping yards. “They’ve taken control of Pier 42. They know that if they can hold those shipping containers until midnight, they can leak your private manifest to the federal prosecutors.”
Lorenzo didn't look worried. He calmly signed a legal document, his face an impenetrable mask of steel. “Antonio thinks he’s playing chess. He doesn't realize I owned the board before he even sat down.”
I stood up from my chair, walking over to stand beside Lorenzo’s desk. “Lorenzo... please be careful. Antonio and Camila have nothing left to lose. People like that are dangerous.”
Lorenzo set his pen down, reaching out to gently pull me onto his lap. He wrapped his arms securely around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.
“I spent thirty-two years believing that power was the only thing worth protecting, Elara,” Lorenzo whispered softly against my neck. “Then I found you buried in the snow, and I realized that power means nothing if I don't have you to share it with. I’m not going to let a desperate old man take our future away.”
Before I could answer, Stefano’s radio burst to life with high-pitched static.
“Boss! We have a perimeter breach at the North Gate!” a security guard screamed over the speaker. “Multiple heavy vehicles smashing through the security barriers! They’re using heavy fire—!”
BOOM!
A deafening explosion rocked the entire estate, shattering the glass windows of the grand foyer below!
I gasped, clutching Lorenzo’s suit jacket as smoke began pouring into the hallway outside the office.
Lorenzo’s dark eyes instantly turned to ice. He pulled a sleek, heavy handgun from his desk drawer, standing up and shoving me gently behind his broad frame.
“Stefano! Secure the panic room in the east wing!” Lorenzo commanded into his radio. “Get Elara inside now!”
“No! Lorenzo, I’m not leaving you!” I cried, grabbing his arm.
“Elara, listen to me,” Lorenzo said, framing my face in his broad, warm hands, looking into my eyes with intense devotion. “I need to know you are safe so I can end this once and for all. Go with Stefano. I’ll come back for you. I promise.”
Before I could protest, Stefano grabbed my arm, guiding me rapidly down the smoke-filled corridor toward the concealed steel door of the east wing panic room.
Just as the heavy steel door was about to seal shut, I looked back down the hallway.
Antonio Rossi and ten heavily armed mercenaries had broken through the grand staircase, their weapons raised. And standing right behind them, holding a silver pistol with a psychotic, unhinged smile on her face, was Camila Rossi.

“Where is she?!” Camila shrieked over the sound of gunfire. “Where is that dirty little maid?!”
The heavy steel door slammed shut, locking me inside the dark, reinforced room, leaving Lorenzo to face the storm alone.
