Chapter 2 - The Warmth and the Fire

The master bedroom on the top floor of the Moretti mansion smelled of rich cedar, burning oak wood, and expensive lavender oil.

I woke up gasping for air, my entire body burning as if I had been thrown directly into a bed of hot coals. The pain of returning blood circulation was excruciating, radiating through my fingers, toes, and skin in violent, agonizing waves.

“Shh... don't move, Elara. I’m right here.”

A broad, warm hand gently cupped the back of my head, holding a glass of lukewarm water with electrolyte solution to my cracked lips. I looked up through blurred vision and saw Lorenzo Moretti sitting on the edge of the mattress, his dark hair messy, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his usual impenetrable armor completely shattered.

Beside the bed stood Dr. Harrison, the Moretti family’s private physician, adjusting an intravenous bag dripping heavy antibiotics and warm fluids directly into my arm.

“Her core temperature is stabilizing, Don Lorenzo,” Dr. Harrison reported quietly, packing his medical kit. “Ten more minutes in that snowbank and her heart would have stopped permanently. The frostbite on her fingers is severe, but thanks to your rapid intervention, there won't be any permanent tissue damage.”

Lorenzo didn't look at the doctor. His dark eyes remained fixed entirely on my pale face, his thumb gently stroking my cheek with a tenderness that made my breath catch in my throat.

“Thank you, Doctor,” Lorenzo murmured, his voice rough. “Leave us.”

As the heavy bedroom door clicked shut, the silence between us became thick and heavy. I pulled the heavy goose-down duvet tighter around my shoulders, feeling the intense heat radiating from the massive stone fireplace across the room.

“Why did you go out there, Elara?” Lorenzo asked softly, his jaw clenching tightly. “You knew the storm was deadly. Why didn't you come to me?”

I looked down at my bandaged hands, tears stinging the back of my eyes. “Miss Rossi told me... she told me she would report me for stealing her diamond earring if I refused. My father’s debts, Lorenzo... I couldn't lose this job. If I got fired, those men would hurt my brother.”

A dark, terrifying expression flashed across Lorenzo’s face—a flicker of pure, unadulterated violence that made me realize just how close Camila Rossi had come to sealing her own fate.

“Your father’s debts were cleared three months ago, Elara,” Lorenzo revealed quietly.

My head snapped up in utter shock. “What?”

“The men who were threatening your brother... they were dealt with back in September,” Lorenzo explained, reaching out to wrap his warm fingers around my bandaged hand. “I bought out your father’s markers from the syndicate. You don't owe anyone a single penny. You never did.”

I stared at him, my mind spinning in complete chaos. “Then... why did you keep me here? Why let me work as a maid?”

Lorenzo leaned closer, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw honesty that blew away every wall I had built around my heart. “Because if I paid off your debts and handed you a check, you would have packed your bags and left my house forever. And I was selfish enough to want you near me every single day until I could figure out how to make you stay.”

My breath caught in my throat. For months, I had caught him watching me from the shadows of the mansion—quiet glances across the grand foyer, lingering moments when I served his morning coffee. I had convinced myself it was merely the idle curiosity of a powerful man looking at a servant.

I had been so wrong.

Before I could process his words, a loud, frantic banging echoed against the heavy oak doors of the master bedroom.

“Lorenzo!” Camila’s shrill voice screamed from the hallway outside. “Open this door right now! Your security guards are refusing to let my father’s motorcade leave the gates! This is insane!”

Lorenzo didn't flinch. He slowly stood up from the bed, smooth and lethal as a predator rising from its rest. He reached down, gently kissing the top of my head.

“Rest, Elara,” he whispered softly. “I have a business arrangement to terminate.”

Downstairs in the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

The twelve syndicate bosses sat around the perimeter of the room, flanked by their own armed guards, while Stefano and twenty heavily armed Moretti enforcers stood at every exit, rifles held at the ready.

Camila stood near the massive Christmas tree, her face red with anger, her father—Antonio Rossi, a powerful maritime shipping tycoon—standing beside her with a furious glare.

“What is the meaning of this outrage, Lorenzo?!” Antonio Rossi barked as Lorenzo descended the grand marble staircase. “You lock my daughter in this house? You hold my men at gunpoint on Christmas Eve?! Have you lost your mind over a disposable house maid?!”

Lorenzo reached the bottom of the stairs, stepping smoothly across the marble floor until he stood three feet from Antonio and Camila. His presence was so terrifyingly dominant that the surrounding guards instinctively took a step back.

“Your daughter sent an innocent woman into a minus-twenty-degree blizzard to die, Antonio,” Lorenzo said, his voice flat, calm, and utterly lethal.

Camila stepped forward, tossing her blonde curls arrogantly. “She was reckless! I dropped my earring, and she went out to look for it! How was I supposed to know she was stupid enough to stay out there?!”

Lorenzo reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it, revealing the massive, five-carat teardrop diamond earring resting inside.

Camila’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying shock.

“My housekeepers found this twenty minutes ago, Camila,” Lorenzo revealed softly, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom. “Tucked neatly inside the sofa cushions in the private parlor. Where you placed it before you sent Elara onto the terrace.”

The twelve syndicate bosses gasped, looking at Camila with sudden, deep disgust. Even in the ruthless world of organized crime, intentionally murdering a defenseless servant out of petty jealousy was viewed as dishonorable and psychotic.

Antonio Rossi’s face drained of color. “Camila... is this true?”

“She was looking at him!” Camila shrieked, completely dropping her polished facade, her eyes wild with unhinged rage. “She’s been looking at my fiancé for months! She’s a dirty, penniless nobody! She deserved to freeze!”

Lorenzo took a slow step toward her, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying light that made Camila instantly stumble backward in fear.

“Our engagement is canceled, Camila,” Lorenzo declared smoothly. “And the Rossi-Moretti shipping merger is void, effective immediately.”

Antonio Rossi gasped, stepping forward frantically. “Lorenzo, no! You can't cancel the merger! My company has twenty million dollars tied up in those Atlantic docks! If you pull out, Rossi Logistics goes bankrupt by the end of the month!”

Lorenzo looked at Antonio with pure, unadulterated contempt. “Then I suggest you start liquidating your assets, Antonio. Because by sunrise tomorrow, my syndicate is seizing every single port your family operates.”

“You can't do this!” Camila screamed, her manicured hands clutching her father’s arm. “You’re ruining us over a maid!”

Lorenzo looked her dead in the eye, his voice carrying an absolute authority that shattered her world forever.

“She is not a maid,” Lorenzo declared, his voice echoing across the grand hall for every boss to hear. “She is the future Mrs. Moretti.”
