Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's Trap and the Secret Vault Beneath Our HomeThe morning sun broke through the heavy Chicago storm clouds, casting a sickly yellow hue across the intensive care unit. Ethan remained trapped in his medically induced coma, breathing through a ventilator, his strong chest rising and falling to the mechanical rhythm of the ICU monitors. Outside, Northwestern Memorial Hospital was no longer just a place of healing; it had become an armed fortress.

Viktor Vance’s sudden appearance the night before was only the opening salvo. By dawn, the hospital perimeter was surrounded not by police cruisers, but by black Lincoln Navigators belonging to the Blackwood inner circle. Marcus Vance, Viktor’s ruthless uncle and the patriarch of the rival syndicate, had sent a clear message: Ethan was vulnerable, and the empire was up for grabs.

I sat in the hospital cafeteria with a cold cup of black coffee, my mind racing at a fever pitch. Mia sat across from me, silent and trembling, clutching a paper cup of water like a lifeline.

"Talk," I commanded, my voice devoid of warmth. "And start with why my husband bought you a penthouse in the Gold Coast while telling me he was working late on shipping logistics."

Mia swallowed hard, tears welling in her eyes. "My name is Mia Sterling. Six months ago, my father’s shipping company was drowning in debt owed to the Blackwood syndicate. Ethan came to collect. When he saw me... he offered a deal. My father’s debts would be erased, our family protected, if I became his mistress. At first, I hated him. He was cold, powerful, and terrifying. But over these past few months, everything changed. He told me his marriage to you was just a political arrangement from his early days, a ghost of the past. He promised he was going to divorce you once the baby was born."

My heart clenched painfully, but I refused to let her see me cry. "A political arrangement?" I laughed bitterly. "Ethan and I met in college when he was just a struggling business major working two jobs. I stood by him when he had nothing. There was no politics—only love. Or so I thought."

Before Mia could reply, my pager buzzed furiously. Code Blue, ICU Room 402.

Ethan!

I bolted from the cafeteria, sprinting down the corridor with Mia hot on my heels. When we reached the ICU, chaos had erupted. The heart monitor was emitting a flat, agonizing screech. Two masked men dressed as hospital orderlies had overpowered the security guard at the door and were unhooking Ethan’s IV lines while aiming a silenced pistol straight at his chest.

"Hey! Drop the weapon!" I screamed, lunging forward without a second thought.

One of the fake orderlies spun around, his elbow catching me across the jaw and sending me crashing hard against the metallic crash cart. Pain exploded across my face, but adrenaline surged through my veins. As he raised the pistol to finish Ethan off, Mia suddenly threw herself forward, tackling the assailant's legs with surprising strength. The bullet slammed harmlessly into the ceiling tiles.

Suddenly, the heavy doors burst open. Ethan’s loyal head of security, Dominic, and three armed bodyguards swarmed the room. In seconds, the two assassins were pinned to the floor, disarmed and zip-tied.

Dominic rushed to my side, helping me up. "Are you alright, Mrs. Blackwood?"

"I’m fine," I spat, wiping a trickle of blood from my lip. I turned to the lead assassin, whose mask had slipped, revealing a familiar smirk. It was one of Viktor Vance’s top hitmen. "Tell Marcus Vance that if he wants my husband dead, he’ll have to go through me first."

With the immediate threat neutralized, the security team locked down the entire floor. But I knew the hospital was no longer safe. If Viktor’s men could infiltrate the ICU once, they could do it again.

"We’re moving him," I declared.

"Where, Doctor?" Dominic asked. "His safehouses are compromised."

"Not all of them," I replied, my eyes narrowing. "Take him to the estate in Barrington. To the secret basement vault behind my study."

Dominic looked surprised. "You knew about the vault?"

"I’m a trauma surgeon, Dominic," I said coldly. "I notice things. Like why a custom reinforced steel door was hidden behind my bookshelf in a house that supposedly only had normal drywall."

Two hours later, under heavy armed escort, Ethan’s unconscious body was transferred via a covert ambulance to our sprawling secluded estate in Barrington, miles away from the city chaos. We set up a fully equipped ICU unit in the underground panic room, transforming my elegant home into a battlefield medical station. Mia stayed close by, acting as my impromptu assistant, fetching saline drips, checking oxygen levels, and silently repenting for her role in the chaos.

As midnight approached, I sat alone beside Ethan’s medical bed in the underground vault, staring at his pale, rugged face. I gently touched his calloused hand—the hand that had held mine during our wedding vows, and the hand that had signed execution orders in the shadows.

"You better wake up, Ethan," I whispered fiercely, pressing my stethoscope against his chest to listen to his steadying heartbeat. "Because the moment you open your eyes, you are going to explain every single lie. And then, we are going to wage war together."
