Chapter 4

And the best part? Ethan was finally waking up.
When I rushed back down to the underground vault that morning, Ethan was sitting up against the medical pillows, his eyes blinking against the harsh light, his hand clutching his bandaged head.
"Claire..." he rasped, his voice rough and broken. He looked around the underground vault, then at me, shame and terror flashing across his rugged features. "You... you saved my life. And my home."
"Save your breath, Ethan," I said coldly, standing at the foot of his bed, crossing my arms over my chest. "You owe me explanations. All of them. Starting with Mia, the baby, and the entire criminal underworld you swore never touched our marriage."
Ethan closed his eyes, a heavy tear escaping down his bruised cheek. "I never meant for you to find out this way, Claire. When I built the Blackwood syndicate, it was to protect my family from men like Viktor Vance who murdered my father. But the deeper I got, the more enemies I made. When I met Mia... it wasn't love. Her father had stolen millions from my shipping lines, and she offered herself as collateral to save him. I tried to keep her safe in a penthouse, far away from my real life. But I was trapped by my own sins. I wanted a divorce, but I couldn't figure out how to leave without putting a target on your back. You were my only pure sanctuary in a world of monsters."
"And you thought lying to me was protection?" I asked, my voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Ethan, I am a trauma surgeon. I cut open chest cavities and hold beating hearts in my bare hands every single day. Do you really think I couldn't handle the truth?"
Ethan looked up, meeting my gaze with fierce, unwavering devotion. "I didn't want to corrupt you, Claire. But I see now... you were never fragile. You are stronger than I ever was."
Before we could finish, the encrypted phone on the table buzzed. It was Dominic. "Boss, Mrs. Blackwood, we’ve tracked Viktor. He’s heading to Pier 44 right now with a private army to board the midnight freighter. If he gets away, the syndicate is finished."
Ethan ripped the IV needles out of his arm, swinging his legs over the side of the bed despite his fresh surgical stitches. I rushed forward to help him steady himself, grabbing my tactical vest and sliding my surgical scalpel into my boot.
"Dominic," I commanded into the radio, my voice echoing with absolute authority. "Mobilize every remaining loyal unit. We’re going to the port. Tonight, we end this war once and for all."
An hour later, the rain began to fall once again over the sprawling industrial expanse of Pier 44 in Chicago. Massive shipping cranes loomed like giant steel skeletons against the stormy sky. Viktor Vance and a dozen of his heavily armed mercenaries stood on the loading dock beside a massive cargo container filled with stolen bonds and smuggled gold, waiting for the getaway freighter to dock.
"Looking for someone, Viktor?"
The deep, gravelly voice echoed across the concrete docks.
Viktor spun around, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief as Ethan Blackwood stepped out of the shadows of a towering shipping container, bruised and battered, but walking with unmistakable predatory grace. Beside him walked me, holding an assault rifle with the poise of a seasoned combat veteran, flanked by Dominic and twenty loyal Blackwood operators.
Viktor sneered, pulling his pistol and aiming it straight at Ethan’s chest. "You should have stayed in your grave, Ethan! Your empire is mine!"
"You forgot one important detail, Viktor," Ethan smiled grimly.
"What's that?" Viktor laughed maniacally.
"My wife runs this city now."
Before Viktor could pull the trigger, I raised my rifle, but I didn't shoot him—Dominic’s sniper bullet struck Viktor’s gun hand with pinpoint precision, sending his weapon clattering across the concrete. In seconds, the entire dock erupted into a brief, decisive firefight. Viktor’s men were vastly outnumbered and outmaneuvered, dropping their weapons one by one as the Blackwood syndicate reclaimed their territory.
Viktor dropped to his knees, clutching his bleeding hand, glaring up at Ethan and me with pure hatred.

Ethan walked up to him, looking down with cold, absolute authority. "It's over, Viktor. Your war is lost."
As police sirens began wailing in the distance—coordinated by the corrupt officials we had scrubbed from the ledger, replaced now by honest federal agents—the nightmare of the Chicago underworld finally came to a crashing halt.
