Chapter 3

"His heart rate is stabilizing," Mia announced quietly, checking the digital readout on the portable ECG machine. "Claire... you’ve barely slept. You should rest. I can watch the monitor."

"I don't need rest, Mia," I replied sharply, adjusting the intravenous drip of antibiotics. "I need answers. And more importantly, I need a strategy. Viktor Vance isn't just sending hitmen; he’s systematically seizing Ethan’s legitimate shipping terminals at the Port of Chicago. If we don’t counterattack within forty-eight hours, the Blackwood empire will collapse from the inside out."

Mia’s eyes widened. "How do you know about the shipping terminals?"

I smirked, tapping the side of my laptop. "Do you really think a brilliant trauma surgeon who manages millions in hospital budgets and emergency supplies couldn't hack into her own husband’s encrypted network? Ethan taught me how to secure data five years ago. He just forgot that clever students always learn how to bypass their teacher's firewalls."

On my screen, a massive schematic of Chicago’s financial and criminal grid glowed in red and green. I had unlocked Ethan’s primary offshore accounts, his untraceable cryptocurrency reserves, and—most importantly—the digital ledger containing the names of every corrupt politician, judge, and police captain on the Blackwood payroll.

Just as I accessed the master ledger, the house security alarms blared violently. A shrill, ear-piercing wail echoed down the concrete stairwell.

Dominic burst through the vault door, weapon drawn, breathing heavily. "Mrs. Blackwood! We’ve got incoming! At least three tactical vans breached the front gates. Viktor Vance’s men have surrounded the estate, and they’ve cut the power grid. We’re on backup generator power."

"How many men?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm as I picked up a heavy-duty medical scalpel from the tray and slid it into my pocket.

"At least twenty," Dominic cursed. "They brought heavy artillery. They’re planning to blow the front doors and take the estate room by room."

Mia gasped, her hands instinctively flying to her pregnant belly, tears streaming down her face. "They’re going to kill us all..."

"Not on my watch," I said, standing up tall, my lab coat swirling around my legs like a captain’s cloak. I looked at Dominic. "Where are Ethan’s personal arm caches?"

Dominic blinked in astonishment. "Behind the wine cellar in the East Wing, behind the vintage 1982 Bordeaux rack."

"Good," I nodded decisively. "Dominic, take your best snipers to the roof and hold the perimeter. Mia, stay right here in the vault, lock the heavy steel bulkhead door from the inside, and do not open it for anyone—anyone—except me or Dominic. If they breach the house, I’m going to give Viktor Vance a surgical lesson he’ll never forget."

For the next hour, the Barrington estate turned into a war zone. Gunfire echoed through the halls overhead, the sharp crack of assault rifles shattering antique stained glass and mahogany furniture. Through the security camera feeds on my tablet, I watched Dominic’s men valiantly holding the stairwells, but the sheer numbers of Viktor’s mercenaries were overwhelming.

Then I saw him on the cameras. Viktor Vance himself stepped through the shattered front entrance, clad in an expensive tailored suit, holding a smoking shotgun with a sadistic grin spread across his scarred face.

"Ethan! Come out, you coward!" Viktor bellowed through the foyer intercom. "Your empire is mine, your money is frozen, and your little doctor wife is about to become a widow for real!"

I didn't answer over the intercom. Instead, I quietly slipped out of the vault before Mia could protest, closing the heavy steel door behind me. I crept up the service staircase into the dimly lit East Wing, my medical instincts guiding every silent footstep. I knew every creak of the floorboards, every shadow in this house, every hidden alcove.

Viktor’s lead enforcer was marching down the hallway toward the master study, his rifle raised, scanning the shadows.

He never saw me coming.

As he passed the narrow doorway of the private library, I stepped out from the darkness, grabbed a heavy brass fireplace poker, and swung with every ounce of pent-up rage, betrayal, and exhaustion I had carried for days. The heavy metal connected squarely with the side of his helmet, sending him crashing unconscious to the Persian rug. I quickly stripped his tactical vest, strapped his Glock 19 to my waist, and picked up his assault rifle.

I was no longer just Claire Bennett, trauma surgeon.

I was the Queen of the Blackwood empire. And I was ready to collect my crown.
