Chapter 1 - The Fall

The air in the grand lobby was thick with tension, frozen in the heavy silence following Julian’s impossible confession. The blonde heiress, Victoria Sterling, dropped her arm from his sleeve as if he were suddenly coated in poison. Her eyes flicked from Julian’s pale face down to Claire, who remained on her knees beside the vacuum cleaner.
"Your wife?" Victoria spat, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Julian, what kind of sick joke is this?"
Julian didn't answer her. His eyes were glued to Claire. Three years ago, he had staged a fiery wreck on a mountain pass in southern France. He had left a charred ring and a burnt vehicle, ensuring the authorities declared him dead. It was supposed to be a clean break. He took the embezzled millions, assumed a fresh identity with altered offshore papers, and positioned himself to marry into the Sterling hotel dynasty.
"Claire," Julian repeated, his voice dropping into a urgent hush. "You shouldn't be here."
Claire slowly stood up. Her knees popped under her weight, a physical reminder of the sixteen-hour shifts she had worked for the past two years. She looked at the man who had shared her bed for seven years, the man whose face she had wept over in dark, lonely rooms. He looked pristine. His suit cost more than her annual salary at the hotel.
"I work here, Julian," Claire said, her tone unnervingly calm despite the tears glistening on her eyelashes. "I wash the floors you walk on."
"This is insane," Victoria hissed, stepping between them. "Security! Get this woman out of here immediately!"
Two heavy-set guards in black suits began marching across the marble floor. Julian looked at Claire's apron pocket, where her hand rested tightly against the cold plastic of the USB drive. His eyes narrowed. He knew Claire. He knew the quiet, methodical sharp mind that lay beneath her gentle exterior. She hadn't bumped into him by accident.
"Wait," Julian commanded the guards, his voice recovering its authoritative edge. He looked at Claire, a subtle warning flashing in his gaze. "She's confused. She thinks I'm someone else. Let me speak to her privately in the office."
Claire felt the heavy USB drive pressing against her hip. Inside that small drive was the truth behind the phantom offshore accounts that had bankrupted her father and driven him to a fatal heart attack three months after Julian vanished. She took a step back, her boots gripping the polished floor.

"I'm not confused," Claire said, loud enough for the gathering crowd of guests to hear. "And I'm not going anywhere private with you."
Julian’s jaw clenched. The polished mask of a successful tech investor began to slip, revealing the cold strategist beneath. He took a fast step toward her, reaching out to grab her wrist before she could react.
