Chapter 12 - A New Sunrise

The morning sun rose over the quiet coastal town in Maine, painting the ocean in brilliant shades of gold and orange.

Claire walked up the narrow gravel path leading to a small, weathered cottage overlooking the sea. The porch light was still on, casting a warm glow against the misty morning air.

She pushed the front door open. The familiar scent of lavender and old books filled her senses.

Sitting in a armchair near the window was an elderly woman, an oxygen tube resting gently beneath her nose, reading a book under a soft lamp.

"Claire?" her mother asked, turning her head slowly.

Claire dropped her bag by the door, walked across the room, and fell to her knees beside her mother's chair, wrapping her arms around her waist.

"It's over, Mom," Claire whispered, her voice choking with sweet relief as tears streamed down her face. "It's finally over. Dad is cleared. We're free."

Her mother stroked Claire’s hair softly, resting her chin on her daughter's head as they watched the sun rise together over the calm, endless sea.
