Chapter 7 - The Counterfeit

At four-fifteen, Claire sat in a small breakroom in the hotel basement, watching the clock tick down. She had swapped her maid's apron for a dark coat Marcus had provided. Her fingers were cold, tracing the edges of the duplicate USB drive Marcus’s IT specialist had prepared.
The door opened, and Victoria Sterling walked in, shutting it firmly behind her.
Victoria had dropped her grand red gown for a tailored cream blazer, but her face was pale, her expression a mix of anger and humiliation. She walked up to Claire, looking down at her with sharp, guarded eyes.
"Julian told me you were an unstable ex who tried to extort him three years ago," Victoria said, her voice tight. "He said you faked your father's death to get sympathy."
Claire didn't flinch. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a worn, folded piece of paper, and handed it to Victoria. It was her father's death certificate, stamped by the state coroner, alongside the court summons filed by Julian’s shell company just two months later.
Victoria took the paper. Her eyes scanned the official seal, the dates, and the cold legal print. Her hand began to tremble slightly.
"He told me his first wife died of cancer in Seattle," Victoria whispered, her confidence crumbling.
"Julian tells people whatever keeps them quiet," Claire said softly. "Look at the signature on line four of that summons. That’s his handwriting. He signed it six months after he supposedly died in France."
Victoria stared at the signature. She recognized the sharp, aggressive slant of the 'J'—the same signature that appeared on her own engagement agreement and loan guaranties.
"He's using you, Victoria," Claire said gently. "Just like he used me, and just like he used my father. Once he gets your family's money, he will destroy you without a second thought."

Victoria swallowed hard, folding the paper with trembling fingers. "What are you going to do to him?"
"I'm going to take back my life," Claire said. "The question is, are you going to help him destroy yours?"
