Chapter 5 - The Mother They Tried to Erase

Sophia entered the courthouse in a wheelchair because her surgeon had forbidden unnecessary strain. She hated the chair, but she hated the thought of collapsing in front of Vittorio's attorneys even more. Emma wheeled her through a crowd of reporters while Rebecca walked beside them.
"No statements," Rebecca told the cameras. "Four newborn children deserve privacy."
Inside, Vittorio's attorney presented photographs of Sophia in the hospital garage, dressed as a janitor. He called her reckless and unstable.
Rebecca rose. "Those photographs omit the physician supervising the transfer, the documented concerns about unauthorized interference, and the subsequent medical assessments."
Dr. Ortiz testified that all four infants had been transported with appropriate clinical support and that Sophia had consistently prioritized their safety. She also explained the serious limitations imposed by Sophia's recovery.
Then the hospital's patient advocate described pressure from private security contractors to restrict Sophia's access to her children. The judge demanded to know who had authorized those requests.
Vittorio's lawyer looked toward Dante.
Dante stood. "I signed an instruction drafted by my uncle. I was wrong to do it."
The courtroom fell silent.
"Were you aware your wife had been recovering from life-threatening complications?" the judge asked.
"Yes."
"And you served divorce papers?"
"Yes."
Sophia watched him without blinking. He did not excuse himself. He did not blame his uncle. For the first time, he let the ugliness of what he had done remain visible.
The judge denied Vittorio's emergency petition and ordered temporary protections against unauthorized removal of the children. Custody and parenting time would be addressed through proper proceedings, with independent consideration of the infants' medical needs.
Outside, Dante approached Sophia but stopped several feet away.
"I'm sorry," he said.
She looked up at him. "You don't get to say that and make it disappear."
"I know."
"You looked at me after I nearly died and told me our babies didn't need me."
His voice broke. "I will spend the rest of my life regretting that."
"Then spend it changing. Don't spend it asking me to forget."
She turned her wheelchair toward the exit.
That night Isabella fled her apartment after learning that federal investigators had requested her financial records. She called Sophia from an unknown number.
"I have something you need," Isabella said. "Proof that Vittorio ordered the hospital records stolen."
"Why would you give it to me?"
"Because he just threatened to kill me."

Sophia glanced toward Emma. "Call my lawyer. We can arrange a safe handoff."
Isabella began to cry. "There's something else. Dante doesn't know what happened to his father."
