Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried With His Father

Isabella met Rebecca and investigators in a public building under a formal cooperation arrangement. Sophia did not attend. She was recovering, and she refused to risk her children for a dramatic confrontation.

The evidence Isabella brought was devastating: payment records, communications about the hospital access breach, and a voice message in which Vittorio ordered an employee to locate Sophia's private medical information. There was also a scanned report from the year Dante's father died.

The official story had been a car accident on an icy road. The report suggested the vehicle had been tampered with before it left the family estate.

Dante read the report in Rebecca's conference room. His hands shook.

"This isn't proof of murder," Rebecca warned. "It's grounds for an investigation."

"He raised me," Dante whispered. "He told me my father trusted him."

"That may be exactly why you never questioned him."

Investigators began examining Vittorio's businesses, but the old man moved first. He called an emergency board meeting of Moretti Holdings and attempted to remove Dante as chief executive, arguing that Dante's cooperation with authorities endangered shareholders.

Dante attended the meeting with two attorneys and an independent director. He presented the financial ledgers showing suspicious transfers from legitimate subsidiaries into companies controlled by Vittorio. The directors voted to suspend Vittorio's access pending an audit.

For the first time in decades, the old man lost control of the room.

"You're choosing that woman over your blood," Vittorio snarled.

Dante answered quietly. "Sophia and our children are my blood. But even if they weren't, what you did would still be wrong."

At the recovery suite, Sophia watched a news report announcing the audit. She felt no triumph. Every headline increased the chance that someone would discover where she was staying.

She had begun physical therapy and could walk short distances with assistance. Each afternoon she sat in the nursery and sang the same lullaby her grandmother had sung to her. The four babies seemed to settle when they heard her voice.

Emma watched from the doorway. "You know you can build a life without him."

"I do," Sophia said. "That's the first thing I know for certain."

Later that evening Rebecca called with news that made Sophia grip the phone. A forensic accountant had found that part of the money Vittorio had taken from Romano Timber had financed the very trust that now named Sophia as a trustee.

"Your grandmother's assets may have been used to build their empire," Rebecca said.

Sophia looked at the sleeping children. "Then we're not just defending ourselves anymore. We're getting the truth back."
