Chapter 9 - The Price of Making Things Right

The Romano restitution fund opened on a rainy Monday. Former mill workers and their descendants arrived with pay stubs, photographs, and stories they had carried for decades. Sophia listened to every one she could.
An elderly man named Samuel Harris showed her a picture of his wife beside a sewing machine. "She worked there until the fire," he said. "We lost our house after the checks stopped coming."
Sophia took his hand. "We're going to review your claim carefully. I won't promise what I can't deliver. But you deserve an answer."
The independent trustees established a transparent claims process. It was slower than Sophia wanted, but it was fairer than handing out money according to who knew the right people.
Dante attended the public hearing on the mill's redevelopment. He sat in the back row and spoke only when called. Asked whether he intended to retain any control over the land, he answered, "No. It belongs to the people who were robbed of it."
Afterward, Sophia found him outside beneath the courthouse awning.
"You didn't have to come," she said.
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because I benefited from what happened, even before I knew the details. I can't repair everything. But I can stop pretending it wasn't my problem."
She looked at the rain. "I used to think you'd never see me as a person outside your family name."
"I didn't. And I hate who I was."
"Hating yourself won't help the children."
"Then I'll keep learning how to be better."
There was a long silence. Finally Sophia said, "They're starting to recognize your voice."
Dante smiled faintly. "I've been practicing the animal noises."
She laughed, genuinely, and the sound startled them both.
Weeks later, Vittorio pleaded guilty to financial crimes and conspiracy charges connected to the trust scheme. Separate investigations into the older death and the hospital breach continued. Isabella cooperated with prosecutors and faced consequences for her own conduct. The legal process was messy and imperfect, but the family's private reign of impunity was ending.
At the babies' first birthday planning meeting, Emma raised an eyebrow when Sophia mentioned inviting Dante.
"You sure?"
"He's their father," Sophia said. "And he's shown up every week."
"That's not the same as taking him back."
May you like
"I know."
For the first time, Sophia understood she could choose her future without choosing it out of fear.
