Chapter 8 - A Woman With Her Own Name

Spring came slowly to Chicago. Sophia moved with the children into a modest, secure house near a park, paid for with funds from her own inheritance and a court-approved distribution from the Romano estate. She refused Dante's offer of a mansion.

"They need a home," she told him through counsel. "Not a fortress."

The civil case over Romano Timber moved forward. Independent auditors traced decades of improper transfers, and the Moretti holding company agreed to restore the riverfront property and pay restitution without requiring Sophia to surrender her other claims.

Sophia did not want the land to become another symbol of power. She wanted to rebuild the mill as a worker-owned manufacturing cooperative and community training center. Emma helped her draft the business plan.

"You're planning a factory with four newborns at home," Emma said, laughing in disbelief.

"I'm planning to hire people who know what they're doing. There's a difference."

Dante's transformation was less visible. He resigned from operational control of several companies, cooperated with investigators, and began the long process of separating lawful businesses from criminal associates. Some men who had once called him king now called him traitor. He did not argue.

He also began counseling. At first he attended because his attorney recommended it. Later he went because he could no longer pretend that fear and control were forms of love.

At a scheduled parenting visit, Sophia found him reading a picture book to all four babies. He made ridiculous animal noises. Nico laughed for the first time.

Sophia stopped in the doorway, surprised by her own smile.

"Don't tell anyone," Dante said. "My reputation would never recover."

"I think it already hasn't."

He smiled back, then grew serious. "I saw the plans for the mill. Your grandmother would be proud."

"You didn't know her."

"No. But I wish I had."

Sophia considered him for a long moment. "She would have told you that love isn't what you promise when everything is easy. It's what you protect when keeping your promise costs you something."

Dante lowered his eyes. "She was right."

That night Sophia received the final audit report. Hidden among the old transactions was an account created for her grandmother's employees. The money had never reached them.

Sophia understood what she had to do next: the recovery would not end with her family. It had to include every family harmed by the theft.
