Chapter 7 - The Night the Dynasty Cracked

Vittorio disappeared before investigators could question him again. His empty office contained shredded papers, a burned phone, and a photograph of Dante as a little boy. On the back Vittorio had written, You were always supposed to be mine.
Dante's security chief traced a company vehicle to an abandoned warehouse near the river. He advised Dante to stay away and called law enforcement. Dante agreed, although every instinct from his old life told him to handle the matter himself.
That decision saved him.
When officers entered the warehouse, they found evidence of a planned attack against the board members who had voted to suspend Vittorio. They also recovered a notebook listing payments to officials, contractors, and intermediaries. Vittorio was arrested the following morning at a private airfield.
The news reached Sophia while she was feeding Lucia. She read the headline twice, then set the phone down.
"It's over?" Emma asked.
"One part of it."
A week later, Dante requested a supervised visit. Sophia discussed it with her attorney and the babies' pediatrician before agreeing. The meeting took place in a neutral family room with a nurse nearby.
Dante entered carrying nothing. No flowers, no diamonds, no checkbook. His eyes filled when he saw the four bassinets.
"That's Lucia," Sophia said. "Matteo is beside her. Nico is the one making all the noise. And Rose is sleeping."
Dante approached slowly. "May I hold one?"
Sophia studied him. "Wash your hands first."
He obeyed. When he lifted Matteo with the nurse's guidance, the baby curled against his chest. Dante's face crumpled.
"Hello, little man," he whispered. "I'm your dad. I'm very late."
Sophia turned toward the window. She had wanted him to love their children. She had not expected the sight of it to hurt.
After the visit, Dante handed Rebecca a signed document relinquishing any claim that his family's private rules could determine custody. He also committed to transparent support payments and independent oversight of the children's trusts.
"This doesn't buy forgiveness," he told Sophia.
"Good," she said. "Because it can't."
He nodded. "I know."
As he left, Sophia noticed a small envelope on the table. Inside was the sapphire necklace she'd sold during their first year of marriage to pay for emergency repairs at her grandmother's house. Dante had found it at an auction.

There was no romantic note. Only a receipt showing it had been placed in Sophia's name.
She put the envelope away without opening it again.
