Chapter 16 - DANA’S MISTAKE

Dana became a protected whistleblower in some contexts.
She also made mistakes.
Taking company data to a personal USB violated policy.
Hiding it in a child’s toy was reckless.
She admitted both.
At deposition:
“Why not give it to outside counsel?”
“I didn’t trust company counsel.”
“Your own lawyer?”
“I didn’t have one then.”
“Regulator?”
“I wasn’t sure what statute applied.”
“Police?”
“I had no proof of a violent crime.”
“So you put it in a doll.”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Did Emma consent?”
“No.”
“Did Adrian?”
“No.”
“Did Maren?”
“No.”
“Did you consider Celeste might suspect?”
“Not enough.”
There.
No whistleblower perfection.
Later Dana apologized to me.
Then separately, through Dr. Wells, in a child-safe sentence to Emma:
“I put something in Birdie without asking. That was wrong. I’m sorry.”
Emma responded:
“No more.”
Dana said:
May you like
“No more.”
That was enough.
