Chapter 9 - WHY DANA HID THE DRIVE

Dana reported the credential issue to her director.

The director forwarded it to Stephen Vale’s chief of staff because Celeste was family.

There.

Exactly backward.

A complaint involving family should move away from family influence.

Instead it moved toward it.

Stephen was traveling.

His chief of staff asked Celeste for context.

Celeste learned about the audit before Stephen saw it.

She confronted Dana.

Not shouting.

Closed-door.

“Are you accusing me of breaking into guest rooms?”

Dana:

“I’m asking why your event credential appears there.”

Celeste:

“You have no idea what executive security requires.”

Dana:

“Then document it.”

Celeste:

“You’re becoming adversarial.”

The phrase appeared in Dana’s contemporaneous notes.

Three days later, Dana was offered reassignment to a regional property.

Same salary.

Different responsibilities.

Was that retaliation?

Company said restructuring.

Dana believed retaliation.

She refused.

Submitted resignation.

Before leaving, she copied audit exports and her own report to a USB.

Was she authorized to take company information?

Complicated.

She retained records she believed were evidence of wrongdoing.

Outside counsel later determined some copies violated company policy, though whistleblower protections might apply depending on use and jurisdiction.

No simple sainthood.

Then she hid the drive?

Not immediately.

For ten months, it stayed in a safe-deposit box.

Why move it into Birdie?

Because two weeks before the hotel incident, Dana learned something new.

Her deactivated badge number appeared again.

Recent access.

After the company claimed the anonymous credential had been terminated.

Someone had reactivated the same identity again.

That frightened her.

She contacted Maren.

Asked whether Emma still carried Birdie.

Why a doll?

Because Dana planned to meet me at the Hawthorne Grand during the plumbing stay.

She had sent a message to my assistant requesting a private conversation.

My assistant forwarded it to corporate legal.

Corporate legal scheduled a call for the following week.

Too slow.

Dana believed Celeste would learn.

She wanted evidence physically near me without handing it to my office.

A terrible plan?

Yes.

But explainable.

During the afternoon at Maren’s apartment, Dana slid the plastic sleeve beneath Birdie’s inner lining while Maren was in the kitchen.

She intended to retrieve the doll at the hotel and hand the evidence to me directly.

Then anonymous texts arrived.

She panicked.

Left town.

She did not tell Maren because she did not want to involve her.

She did not tell Emma anything.

The child was never meant to know.

Then Celeste started asking about the doll.

Why?

Because she had learned Dana visited Maren.

How?

Not secret surveillance.

Maren posted a photograph in a family group chat.

Dana’s coffee mug visible.

Half her reflection in a mirror.

Celeste recognized her.

Small digital carelessness.

Enough.

Celeste knew Dana had been trying to reach me.

Knew Dana had visited the maid who repaired Emma’s doll.

Knew Dana had once kept copies of the access audit.

Then guessed.

The loose seam made the guess stronger.

Celeste did not know what was inside.

May you like

That was why she demanded Emma tell her.

The child had no idea.
