Chapter 19 - EMMA RETURNS TO THE GRAND

Three months after the incident, Emma wanted to go back to the Hawthorne Grand.

Not because anyone suggested exposure therapy.

Because she wanted pancakes from the restaurant.

Specifically:

“Hotel pancakes.”

I said we could order similar pancakes somewhere else.

“No.”

Why?

“Theirs have tiny butter.”

Apparently butter geometry mattered.

Dr. Wells said:

“If she wants to go, let it be ordinary.”

So we went.

Breakfast.

No family suite.

No old hallway.

Just restaurant.

Emma ate pancakes.

Maren visited the table on break.

No uniform? She was working, so uniform.

Emma showed Birdie’s purple seam.

“Nothing inside.”

Maren said:

“I remember.”

Then Emma asked:

“Wall still there?”

I answered:

“Yes.”

“Locked?”

“Maintenance lock. Children can’t open it.”

“Can grownup put kid?”

“No.”

Technically an adult with a maintenance key could open the passage.

I clarified:

“No grown-up is allowed to put a child there.”

Better.

Rules, not magical impossibility.

Emma ate another pancake.

Return complete.
