Chapter 1 - The Spilled Wine and the Italian Secret

“SHUT YOUR MOUTH, YOU IGNORANT LITTLE MAID! YOU DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND ITALIAN!”
Vanessa Bellini stood beside the grand banquet table in a fitted, floor-length red silk gown, her eyes flashing with pure arrogance as she offered a tight, artificial smile to the distinguished Italian gentleman seated across from her.
Fifty wealthy, high-society guests stopped talking, turning their heads to watch as she turned her full venom toward me.
“Emily, I suggest you remember who you are,” Vanessa sneered, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings of the Moretti estate. “Pour the wine. And try not to embarrass me again.”
I held the heavy silver wine pitcher tightly against my white serving apron. My hands were trembling violently—not because she had insulted me, and not because she was treating me like garbage in front of the most powerful people in Chicago.
I was trembling because I had understood every single word she had just spoken in fluent Italian.
And what she had just promised that wealthy foreign businessman could utterly destroy Luca Moretti's family forever.
My name is Emily Carter. I am twenty-five years old, and for eleven grueling months, I have worked as a housemaid at the sprawling Moretti mansion in Chicago. My late grandmother came directly from Naples, and she had lovingly taught me to speak, read, and write fluent Italian before I was even old enough to spell my own name in English.
But Vanessa Bellini didn't know that.
To the cold, elite socialite engaged to the most feared Mafia boss in Illinois, I was just another invisible, replaceable servant. Someone who scrubbed marble floors, changed bedsheets, and vanished into the shadows whenever important guests arrived.
Tonight, however, standing behind the high-backed dining chairs, I had overheard a conversation that I couldn't possibly ignore.
Twenty minutes earlier, while the main course was being served, Vanessa had leaned close to Carlo Vitale—a wealthy, influential businessman visiting from Rome. Speaking in rapid, polished Italian, she had assured him that her fiancé, Luca Moretti, was quietly prepared to sell the family’s historic restaurant.
That restaurant wasn't just a piece of real estate. It was the modest Italian trattoria Luca's late father had opened forty years ago when he arrived in America with nothing. It was the sacred place where Luca and his younger brother, Michael, had washed dishes together as young boys. It was the one physical asset on earth that Luca had publicly sworn he would never, ever sell.
And Carlo Vitale had replied in Italian with something even worse: “What about Michael? He still legally owns half the deed.”
To which Vanessa had offered a dark, sinister smile and replied: “Michael won't be a problem after tonight.”
Now, I stood beside the banquet table, my heart hammering against my ribs, wondering what those terrifying words truly meant.
“Emily!” Vanessa snapped her fingers sharply in front of my face. “Are you listening to me?”
“Yes, ma'am,” I whispered, keeping my eyes lowered.
“Then refill Mr. Vitale's glass immediately.”
I stepped forward on shaky legs, lifting the heavy silver pitcher. Carlo Vitale looked up from his plate, staring directly at my face. Then, leaning back in his leather chair, he asked a direct question in Italian: “Does Mr. Moretti actually know what his fiancée has agreed to behind his back?”
I froze in place, my breath catching in my throat.
Vanessa let out a condescending laugh, waving her hand dismissively. “Don't bother speaking to her, Carlo. She barely understands basic English.”
Several guests nearby chuckled politely into their linen napkins. My face burned with intense humiliation. But Carlo Vitale wasn't laughing. He was studying my face carefully, noticing the subtle flinch in my eyes.
Then he repeated the question in Italian, slowly and deliberately.
I understood him perfectly.
Vanessa's smile tightened into a sharp line. “Emily, pour the wine right now!”
I glanced across the long mahogany table toward Luca Moretti. At thirty-six, Luca was a imposing, powerful man—dressed in a flawless black tailored suit, dark hair neatly swept back, with dark ink tattoos climbing up his neck and resting on his broad hands. He was currently speaking quietly with his twenty-four-year-old younger brother, Michael Moretti.
Michael—the very brother Vanessa had just promised would 'no longer be a problem after tonight.'
In that split second, I made a choice that would alter the course of my life forever.
“Mr. Moretti,” I said softly, my voice cutting through the ambient chatter.
Luca paused, turning his dark, piercing eyes toward me. “Yes, Emily?”
Vanessa immediately interrupted, her voice high and sharp. “Darling, ignore her! She's been unusually difficult and incompetent tonight—”
“There's something I think you should know, sir,” I continued, ignoring her.
Vanessa reached out and violently grabbed my wrist. “Absolutely not!”
The silver pitcher tilted in my grip. Deep red wine splashed violently across the crisp white tablecloth.
Vanessa stood up abruptly from her chair. “Look what you've done, you clumsy fool!”
I pulled my arm back out of her grip. “I'm sorry, but—”
Before I could finish, Vanessa snatched the heavy silver pitcher from my hands and deliberately poured the remaining red wine down the front of my white maid uniform.
A collective, sharp gasp echoed across the dining room. Wine soaked through my fabric, dripping onto my apron and shoes. My throat locked up, tears of shame stinging my eyes.
Then Vanessa pointed a sharp, manicured finger toward the floor. “Clean that up right now. And afterward, pack your bags and get off this property.”
My mind raced. I thought about my sick mother living in a cramped apartment. The rent that was due in three days. The unpaid medical bills stacked beside her bed. I desperately needed this job to keep us afloat.
But then I looked at Michael Moretti. He was sitting beside his brother, laughing softly at a joke Luca had just made, completely unaware of the treacherous trap being set around his neck three chairs away.
I couldn't stay silent. I couldn't let them ruin an innocent young man.
“Mrs. Bellini,” I whispered, wiping the wine from my hands. “You didn't translate what Mr. Vitale said correctly.”
Vanessa stopped smiling. Her eyes narrowed into lethal slits. “What did you say?”
“He didn't say he was pleased about your upcoming wedding,” I said clearly.
The entire dining room fell into an uncomfortable, absolute silence. Fifty wealthy guests stared at us.
Vanessa let out a nervous, mocking laugh. “Oh, sweetheart. Don't embarrass yourself any further. You don't speak Italian.”
I looked directly into her eyes, my voice steadying. “Yes, ma'am. I do.”
A heavy chair scraped against the hardwood floor. Luca slowly stood up at the head of the table. “Emily?”
I swallowed hard, turning to face the head of the Moretti family. “My grandmother came from Naples, sir. I grew up speaking fluent Italian.”
Luca's sharp expression instantly tightened. “Then tell me what Mr. Vitale said.”
Vanessa frantically stepped between us, her voice rising in panic. “Luca, she's lying! She's making things up because I just fired her!”
Luca didn't raise his voice, but his tone was laced with pure steel. “Move out of the way, Vanessa.”
Vanessa hesitated, then slowly stepped aside, her face turning pale.
I turned toward Carlo Vitale and answered his original question in perfect, fluent Neapolitan Italian.
Carlo’s dark eyes widened in sheer shock. He slowly stood up from his seat. “My sincere apologies, Mr. Moretti,” Carlo said in English, looking at Luca. “I was brought here under the assumption that you were fully aware of the commercial arrangement.”
Luca frowned deeply. “What arrangement?”
Carlo glanced toward Vanessa, who was now shaking. “The sale of your late father's trattoria.”
Michael stopped laughing. His face drained of color.
Luca stared at Carlo. “My father's restaurant is not for sale. It will never be for sale.”
Carlo looked genuinely confused. “Your fiancée assured me earlier tonight that both Moretti brothers had officially agreed to sign over the deed.”
Luca slowly turned his head toward Vanessa, his jaw clenching tightly. “Both brothers?”
Vanessa swallowed hard, her chest heaving. “Darling... it's just a preliminary business discussion! I was trying to secure capital for our wedding—”
Michael pushed back his chair, standing up. “I haven't discussed selling a single brick of Dad's restaurant!”
Luca took a slow, deliberate step toward his fiancée. “Then why did you tell Carlo that Michael wouldn't be a problem after tonight, Vanessa?”
Vanessa went completely rigid. I hadn't even translated that specific sentence yet. And she knew it.
Luca noticed her horrified expression instantly. “Emily,” he said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. “What exactly did she say about my brother?”
I looked at Michael, then at Vanessa. My voice shook, but I spoke every word clearly:
“She said Michael wouldn't be a problem after tonight.”
A suffocating silence descended over the room.
Michael looked at Vanessa, his eyes wide with hurt and confusion. “Vanessa... what the hell does that mean?”
“It's being taken completely out of context!” Vanessa shrieked, backing away.
But Carlo Vitale was staring at her with sudden, deep suspicion. Then he spoke again—this time in rapid Italian.
And what he said made my stomach churn with pure terror.
“You told me the younger brother had already signed papers agreeing to leave Chicago permanently tonight.”
Luca turned to me. “Translate, Emily.”
I could barely breathe. “Mr. Vitale says Vanessa told him Michael was leaving Chicago tonight.”
Michael looked at his older brother, his voice trembling. “Leaving? Luca... I was going to tell you something private after dinner tonight.”
Vanessa suddenly lunged forward, grabbing Michael's arm tightly. “Don't say another word, Michael!”
Luca went deadly still. “Michael. Talk to me.”
His younger brother looked terrified, staring at the floor. Then Carlo quietly added one final, devastating sentence in Italian.
I understood it immediately. And for a second, I wished with all my heart that I hadn't.
Luca saw the sheer horror on my face. “Emily. What did he say?”
Tears filled my eyes. “Sir... Mr. Vitale says he was explicitly told that your brother wouldn't be attending tomorrow's family board meeting.”
Luca frowned, his dark eyes narrowing. “Why wouldn't my brother be attending?”
I looked toward Vanessa. She was desperately shaking her head, silently begging me with her eyes to keep quiet.
I took a deep breath and delivered the rest of the translation:
“Because someone had already arranged for Michael to be forcefully taken away tonight.”
Luca turned his entire body toward his fiancée. “Taken where?”
Nobody answered.
Then, Michael whispered something that made Luca's entire face drain of color, turning his eyes into cold, murderous ice:
“Luca... Vanessa told me three hours ago that YOU wanted me gone.”
Luca stared at his younger brother in absolute horror. “I never said that. I would die before I let anyone touch you!”

Michael slowly looked toward the grand double doors of the dining room. “Then why are the two armed men she hired currently waiting outside in the driveway to take me?”
And that was the precise moment when Vanessa's powerful father, Marco Bellini, slowly rose from his seat at the center of the table. For the very first time all evening, the billionaire corporate tycoon looked utterly terrified—because whatever dark trap his daughter had planned for the Moretti family was never supposed to be exposed in front of fifty witnesses.
