Chapter 4 - The Fire and the Trial

Before Enzo could even finish his sentence, Luca stormed out of his study, pulling a high-powered tactical handgun from his desk drawer.

“Luca! I’m coming with you!” I shouted, running down the hallway after him.

“No, Emily! It’s too dangerous!” Luca barked, not slowing his pace as he headed toward the private garage.

“I know the back entrance of that trattoria better than anyone!” I yelled back, grabbing his arm. “You showed me the cellar layout last week! If Michael is trapped, he’s in the wine basement!”

Luca looked into my determined eyes for a split second, seeing the unyielding courage shining in my face. He grabbed a bulletproof vest from the equipment rack, threw it over my head, and pulled me into his armored SUV.

“Enzo! Mobilize the full strike team to 5th Street now!” Luca roared into his radio as he slammed his foot onto the accelerator, sending the heavy vehicle screaming out into the rainy Chicago night.

Ten minutes later, we arrived at the historic neighborhood where Luca’s father had opened his restaurant forty years ago.

Massive plumes of thick black smoke and orange flames were billowing into the night sky from the roof of the beloved trattoria. Standing across the street in the pouring rain, wearing a heavy trench coat, was Marco Bellini, flanked by ten heavily armed Vance cartel mercenaries holding automatic rifles.

And standing right beside him, her face contorted in psychotic, vengeful joy, was Vanessa.

“LUCA!” Vanessa shrieked crazily over the roar of the flames as our SUV screeched to a halt. “You destroyed my family! Now I’m burning your father’s memory to the ground with your precious little brother inside!”

Luca threw open the door, stepping out into the rain with his weapon drawn, his dark eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated fury. “Where is my brother, Marco?!”

Marco Bellini raised an automatic rifle, pointing it directly at Luca’s chest. “He’s suffocating in the cellar, Moretti! And you’re going to join him!”

Before Marco could pull his trigger, three heavy Moretti armored trucks slammed through the alleyway, taking tactical positions around the street. Enzo and twenty Moretti enforcers poured out, unleashing a hail of suppressed gunfire.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

A fierce, terrifying shootout erupted in the rain-slicked street.

While Luca and his men pinned down the Vance cartel mercenaries behind their vehicles, I ducked low beneath the gunfire, sprinting toward the rear alleyway behind the burning restaurant.

“Emily! No!” Luca screamed out over the gunfire, trying to reach me, but two cartel mercenaries pinned his position with heavy fire.

I ignored the danger, using my small size to slip past the side alley, reaching the heavy iron storm doors that led into the underground wine cellar. The metal handles were scorching hot, burning my palms, but I pulled with all my strength, throwing the cellar doors open.

Thick, suffocating gray smoke poured out into the rain.

“MICHAEL!” I screamed into the dark, smoke-filled basement. “MICHAEL!”

A weak, coughing sound echoed from beneath the wooden stairs. “E-Emily...? Down here... the ceiling collapsed!”

I covered my mouth with my wet shirt sleeve and rushed down the stone stairs into the blinding smoke. Michael was pinned beneath a heavy, charred wooden beam near the rear wine racks, his face covered in soot, gasping for air.

“Hold on!” I gasped, grabbing the edge of the heavy beam. Using every ounce of adrenaline coursing through my veins, I heaved the beam upward, lifting it just enough for Michael to crawl out from underneath.

“G-get out!” Michael coughed violently, grabbing my arm as we stumbled up the stone stairs together into the cool rainy air of the alley.

Just as we cleared the alley, a sudden, rough hand grabbed me from behind by my hair, violently yanking me backward onto the wet pavement!

I screamed as a cold metallic barrel pressed firmly against my temple.

It was Vanessa. Her clothes were soaked, her hair wild, her eyes completely unhinged.

“You...” Vanessa hissed through her teeth, her voice dripping with pure hatred. “You little peasant maid... you ruined my life! You took my marriage! You took my wealth!”

Luca burst out of the smoke-filled alley, his gun raised, but froze instantly when he saw Vanessa holding a gun to my head. Michael collapsed onto his knees beside the alley wall, gasping for oxygen.

“Put the gun down, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, terrifying calm, though his hands were visibly trembling with fear for my life.

“No!” Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the street where her father lay wounded on the ground, surrounded by disarmed cartel mercenaries. “If I don't get to be Mrs. Moretti, nobody does! I’m going to put a bullet through her head right in front of you!”

“Vanessa, look at me!” Luca demanded, taking a slow, steady step forward, keeping his dark eyes locked onto hers. “You want revenge? Take it on me. Let her go.”

“She’s nothing!” Vanessa screamed, her finger tightening around the trigger. “She’s just a housemaid!”

“She is NOT a housemaid!” Luca roared back, his voice echoing across the burning street with absolute, unshakeable authority. “She is the woman I love! She is the future Mrs. Moretti!”

Vanessa blinked in complete, speech-bound shock at his words.

In that half-second of her distraction, I slammed my elbow backward with all my strength into her stomach!

Vanessa gasped in pain, dropping her weapon. Luca lunged forward with blinding speed, kicking the gun away into the gutter and pinning Vanessa violently against the brick wall, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Enzo and his men immediately swept in, securing Marco Bellini and the remaining cartel mercenaries as police sirens began wailing in the distance.

Luca instantly turned around, grabbing me by my shoulders, pulling me violently against his chest in a fierce, desperate hug, burying his face in my wet hair as he wept tears of immense relief.

“Are you hurt, Emily? My God... are you hurt?!” Luca choked out, his voice cracking with emotion.

I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, resting my head against his pounding heart. “I’m okay, Luca... Michael is safe... we’re all okay.”

Luca pulled back slightly, framing my face in his large, warm hands, looking down at me with an intensity of love that filled my entire soul.

“Did you hear what I said to her, Emily?” Luca whispered softly, his dark eyes glowing under the streetlights.

I offered a small, tearful smile. “You called me the future Mrs. Moretti.”

“I wasn't lying to her, Emily,” Luca swore, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a simple, elegant velvet box containing a stunning, flawless diamond ring. “I never want you to look at another maid uniform again. Will you make me the happiest man on earth and become my wife?”

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy streamed down my face as I looked up into the eyes of the man I loved.

May you like

“Yes, Luca!” I cried out softly. “Yes! A thousand times yes!”

Luca slid the diamond ring onto my finger, pulled me into his arms, and kissed me deeply in the falling rain, while Michael, Enzo, and the entire Moretti family cheered loudly around us.
