Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Revenge

Three weeks passed.

The news of the sudden, violent fallout between the Moretti empire and Bellini Holdings had sent shockwaves through Chicago's underground and financial sectors.

Without the Moretti organization’s massive logistics network to protect them, Marco Bellini’s shipping firm rapidly collapsed into financial ruin. Out of sheer desperation, Marco and his disgraced daughter, Vanessa, fled to New York, attempting to forge an alliance with a ruthless rival crime family known as the Moretti's fiercest competitors—the Moretti family's long-time enemies, the Vance syndicate.

Meanwhile, my life had completely transformed beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

Luca had immediately moved my sick mother out of her cramped, mold-infested apartment and placed her into a private, top-tier medical facility in the suburbs, fully covering her treatments. I was given a gorgeous, private guest suite on the top floor of the Moretti mansion.

I was no longer sweeping floors or serving wine. Luca had hired me as his primary private Italian translator and cultural liaison for his international real estate ventures.

Every evening, Luca, Michael, and I sat together at the grand mahogany dining table—the exact table where Vanessa had tried to destroy them—eating simple, home-cooked Italian meals, laughing, and sharing stories about Luca’s late father.

For the first time in my life, I felt truly safe, respected, and valued.

And slowly, subtly, something undeniable began to bloom between Luca and me.

Behind his fierce, intimidating reputation as the most dangerous Don in Illinois was a deeply honorable, fiercely protective man who checked on my mother's health every single morning and brought me fresh pastries from his father's trattoria every afternoon.

One chilly evening, while we were sitting in his private leather-bound study reviewing land deeds for a new museum project in Rome, Luca stood up and walked over to my desk, holding two crystal glasses of sparkling water.

“You’re working too late, Emily,” Luca murmured softly, setting a glass beside my papers.

I looked up, meeting his deep brown eyes, feeling a warm blush spread across my cheeks. “I just wanted to finish these translations before tomorrow’s board meeting, Luca.”

Luca reached out, his broad, calloused hand gently covering mine on the desk. His touch was warm, sending a pleasant shiver straight up my spine.

“You don't need to prove anything to me, Emily,” Luca whispered, his voice rich and deep. “You’ve already given this family more than we could ever repay.”

I looked down at our joined hands, then looked back up into his handsome face. “I didn't do it for a repayment, Luca. I did it because... because I care about you.”

Luca leaned down slowly, his dark eyes burning with an intense, fierce devotion that made my breath catch in my throat. His hand gently cupped my jawline, his thumb stroking my cheek.

“I have spent three weeks trying to convince myself that I shouldn't touch you,” Luca confessed hoarsely, his face inches from mine. “That a man with blood on his hands like me doesn't deserve a woman with a soul as pure as yours.”

“Luca...” I breathed softly.

“But every time I look at you sitting at my table, Emily,” he continued, his voice trembling slightly, “I realize that you are the only good thing left in my world.”

Luca gently leaned in and pressed his lips against mine—a soft, deep, breathtaking kiss that sent a wave of pure, overwhelming warmth through my entire body. I wrapped my arms around his broad neck, kissing him back with all the pent-up emotion I had carried for weeks.

When we finally pulled back, resting our foreheads together, the loud ringing of Luca's satellite phone shattered the quiet room.

Luca stepped back, answering the call with a frown. “Speak, Enzo.”

Enzo's voice echoed through the speaker, laced with extreme urgency: “Don Luca! We have a severe situation. Marco Bellini and his daughter just returned to Chicago. They brought twenty armed mercenaries from the Vance cartel. They just set fire to your father's trattoria!”

Luca’s face went instantly ghost-white, his jaw clenching so hard the veins in his neck bulged.

“Where is Michael?!” Luca roared into the phone.

“Michael was at the trattoria reviewing the weekend accounts, Don Luca!” Enzo panicked. “They’ve trapped him inside the burning building!”
