Chapter 2 - The Trap at the Gates

The silence in the grand dining room was so absolute that you could hear the heavy autumn rain slamming against the tall glass windows.

Luca Moretti didn't shout. He didn't slam his fist on the mahogany table. That wasn't how the Don of the Moretti family handled threats. Instead, he reached into his bespoke suit jacket, pulled out a sleek black satellite phone, and pressed a single button on speed dial.

“Enzo,” Luca said softly into the phone, his voice carrying an arctic chill. “Lock down the perimeter. Nobody leaves the estate. Secure the two men standing near the driveway gates and bring them inside.”

From the far end of the table, Vanessa’s father, Marco Bellini, took a step forward, trying to project a calm, authoritative smile. “Luca, my boy, let’s not act recklessly in front of our distinguished international guests. This is clearly a massive misunderstanding caused by a bitter housemaid who was just fired for ruining an expensive dinner.”

Luca slowly turned his head to look at Marco Bellini. “Sit down, Marco.”

“Luca, I am your prospective father-in-law—”

“SIT DOWN!” Luca’s voice exploded across the room like a thunderclap, vibrating the crystal chandeliers above our heads.

Marco Bellini instantly froze, his face turning pale as he slowly sank back into his leather chair.

Vanessa was hyperventilating now, her hands clutching her silk red gown. “Luca, please! I was doing this for us! Your brother is weak! He wanted to give away his shares in the trattoria to a charity! I was just trying to protect our financial future!”

“By lying to my brother?” Luca asked, taking three slow, deliberate steps toward her. “By telling him I wanted him exiled from Chicago? By hiring outside enforcers to abduct him from my own home?”

“I didn't hire them to hurt him!” Vanessa wept hysterically, tears ruining her heavy makeup. “I just wanted him sent to a private medical facility in Canada for a few months until our corporate merger was finalized!”

Michael let out a bitter, choked laugh, tears glistening in his eyes. “A medical facility? You told me my brother was going to put a bullet in my head if I didn't get into that car tonight, Vanessa! You played us against each other!”

The grand mahogany double doors of the dining room swung open.

Four broad-shouldered, armed Moretti security guards stepped into the room. Leading them was Enzo—Luca's chief of security. Dragged between the guards were two heavy-set men in dark tactical jackets, their hands zip-tied tightly behind their backs.

Enzo tossed two high-powered suppressed handguns onto the dining table with a heavy metallic clatter.

“We found them parked behind the rose garden, Don Luca,” Enzo reported coldly. “They had zip-ties, heavy sedatives, and a contract signed by Bellini Holdings.”

The fifty dinner guests gasped in absolute horror. Several wealthy socialites immediately grabbed their coats, desperate to leave, but Luca’s guards stood firmly at every exit.

Luca looked down at the suppressed weapons on the table, then shifted his gaze back to Vanessa.

“You brought armed mercenaries onto my family's land,” Luca whispered, his tone so deadly quiet that a chill ran down my spine. “You manipulated my brother. You tried to steal my father's legacy. And you used my name to commit treason against my blood.”

Luca reached out, took the heavy engagement ring from Vanessa’s trembling finger, and dropped it into a crystal glass of red wine sitting on the table.

“The wedding is canceled,” Luca declared smoothly. “And the Bellini family's commercial shipping contracts with the Moretti organization are terminated, effective this exact second.”

Marco Bellini stood up frantically, his hands shaking. “Luca! You can't liquidate our shipping contracts! That will ruin my family financially within thirty days!”

“Then I suggest you leave my house before I decide to liquidate more than just your contracts, Marco,” Luca warned, his dark eyes flashing with lethal intent.

Luca motioned to Enzo. “Escort the Bellini family and their mercenaries off my property. If any of them ever step foot in Chicago again, handle them accordingly.”

Vanessa shrieked and begged as the guards roughly grabbed her arms, dragging her and her pale, defeated father out of the grand dining room.

Within ten minutes, the remaining dinner guests were quietly ushered out to their waiting limousines by the estate staff. The grand hall, once filled with music and laughter, fell into a heavy, dramatic quiet.

Only Carlo Vitale, Michael, Luca, and I remained in the vast room.

I stood awkwardly near the sideboard, soaked in red wine, holding my dirty apron, trembling from the immense adrenaline fading from my body. I knew my time at the mansion was over. I had exposed a Mafia Don's fiancée in front of fifty people. I expected to be handed a final envelope of cash and quietly ushered out the back door.

I turned around to slip away toward the servants' hallway.

“Emily,” Luca’s deep voice echoed across the quiet room.

I stopped, turning around slowly to face him. “Yes, Mr. Moretti?”

Luca walked over to where I stood. He didn't look like a terrifying crime Don in that moment. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire world crumble around him, yet held immense gratitude in his eyes.

He looked down at my wine-soaked uniform, his brow furrowing with deep regret.

Without saying a word, Luca unbuttoned his custom suit jacket, slipped it off his broad shoulders, and gently draped the warm, heavy fabric over my trembling, cold shoulders. The jacket smelled faintly of expensive sandalwood and fresh rain.

“You saved my brother’s life tonight, Emily,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. “And you saved my father's memory.”

“I... I just did what was right, sir,” I stammered, wrapping his jacket tightly around myself.

Michael walked over, wiping a tear from his cheek, and threw his arms around me in a tight, emotional hug. “Thank you, Emily. If you hadn't spoken up... I would be in the back of that car right now.”

Carlo Vitale stepped forward, offering a warm, respectful bow to me. “You possess extraordinary courage, young lady. And an immaculate Neapolitan accent.”

May you like

Luca looked at my red-stained apron beneath his suit jacket, then looked directly into my eyes.

“You aren't a maid in this house anymore, Emily,” Luca declared firmly. “Starting tonight, you are under the personal protection of the Moretti family. And tomorrow morning, we begin rebuilding.”
