Chapter 17 - ELEANOR’S JOB

At six, Lila asked:
“Was Mommy servant?”
The word found its way back.
Children store poison carefully.
I answered:
“No.”
“What she do?”
I explained costume conservation badly.
“She helped take care of old clothes and fashion objects so they didn’t get ruined.”
“Like doctor?”
“For dresses.”
She loved that.
Then:
“Did she polish shoes?”
“Sometimes as part of conservation, probably. Carefully.”
“On knees?”
“Maybe sometimes people kneel to reach things.”
“But servant?”
“No.”
Then I corrected myself.
“And there is nothing wrong with being a servant or housekeeper either. The wrong thing was Camilla saying somebody’s job decides whether their child belongs beneath another person.”
Lila thought.
“Marie housekeeper.”
“Yes.”
“Marie bossy.”
