Chapter 7 - THE MUSEUM CATALOGUE

The preview catalogue was not a final publication.

Important.

Halcyon had not knowingly stolen Lila’s property.

Their staff believed Camilla had authority to coordinate the loans through me.

Why?

Emails.

Camilla:

Alessandro has asked me to consolidate the household fashion holdings for review.

Technically false.

Then:

The Eleanor pieces will be presented alongside mine as one family archive.

No approval from me.

Then:

Trust formalities are being handled separately.

They were not.

Halcyon replied:

We will need lender-of-record confirmation and insurance documentation before final inclusion.

Correct.

Camilla knew she could not complete the loan without Commonwealth.

So why move everything?

Why relabel?

Why photograph first?

Leonard answered before I did.

“Fait accompli.”

I hated how well the phrase fit.

Camilla could not legally give away Lila’s shoes.

But she could create enough public expectation that saying no became embarrassing.

Preview dinner announced.

Curatorial photography completed.

Catalogue layouts prepared.

Donors told the Drayton-Virelli archive would anchor the exhibition.

Then Commonwealth receives an urgent request:

Everyone is ready. Surely we aren’t going to embarrass the museum over a temporary loan.

Pressure.

Not authority.

Social leverage.

Old families used it constantly.

Do the ceremony first.

Make the paperwork catch up.
