Chapter 26 - LILA HAS A DAUGHTER

Lila became a mother at thirty-three.
Her daughter, Rose, inherited Eleanor’s fascination with clothes.
At four, Rose loved shoes.
Of course.
She lined them beside the front door.
Matched colors.
Insisted everyone needed “party shoes.”
One afternoon she found a soft polishing cloth.
“What this?”
Lila showed her.
“Cleaning cloth.”
“Can I?”
“For your shoes.”
Rose polished one tiny red flat for approximately twenty seconds.
Then became bored and left.

The cloth stayed on the floor.
Nobody called her ungrateful.
