Chapter 13 - ROSALIE’S HANDS

Rosalie’s hands took three weeks to look normal.
Longer to stop hurting when hot water touched them.
I offered to hire three nurses, two chefs, and enough household help to make her furious.
She said:
“I need you to stop solving feelings with payroll.”
Fair.
We already had appropriate staff.
What she needed was control over her own participation.
If she wanted to cook, she cooked.
If she wanted to wash one mug, she washed one mug.
If she wanted to leave a plate on the counter, civilization survived.
Then June began asking:
“Is washing dishes bad?”
No.
Important correction.
Chores were not abuse.
Helping was not abuse.
The problem was coercion, unsafe expectations, hunger threats, hierarchy, and pretending unpaid work was owed because of family rank.
So we let June help safely.
One plastic plate.
Carry her cup.
Put napkins in a basket.
Then stop when tired.

She was enormously proud of herself.
That was how we reclaimed service from servitude.
