Chapter 14 - THE STAFF SPEAKS

Professional management interviewed every employee privately.

No Beatrice.

No family elder.

Staff finally talked.

Some loved her.

That surprised Rosalie.

Beatrice had paid hospital bills quietly for two housekeepers.

Helped one driver’s son find work.

Visited an injured cook every week.

She was generous.

She was also controlling.

Both.

Employees described being moved between properties without clear cost coding.

Last-minute events.

Pressure not to record overtime because “the family will make it up.”

Sometimes Beatrice did make it up through cash gifts.

That created more problems.

Gifts are not payroll.

Professional systems replaced favors with wages.

Written schedules.

Overtime.

Transfer authorization.

Safety procedures.

Complaint channels bypassing family residents.

The house became less personal.

Also fairer.

Beatrice called it cold.

One housekeeper answered:

May you like

“Cold pays on Friday.”

I loved her instantly.
