Chapter 6 - WHERE THE STAFF WENT

The missing workers were not hiding.
They were working.
That made the scheme easier to reconstruct.
The night of our family dinner, three Villa Montanari employees had been reassigned to a charity reception Beatrice hosted at the Montanari Heritage Chapel.
Two went to her townhouse for a private donor supper the following morning and were sent early to prepare.
One driver became a courier for floral deliveries.
All potentially legitimate assignments.
The problem:
Costs remained charged to Villa Montanari’s primary dinner budget.
Why?
Beatrice’s explanation:
“Shared family function.”
The charity reception was associated with a family foundation.
Could be shared.
The townhouse preparation was personal.
Could not.
The floral deliveries supported Beatrice’s House Committee event.
Different cost center.
Again:
Not bags of stolen cash.
Sloppy, self-serving allocation.
Then more examples.
Over eighteen months, approximately $286,000 in household labor and event expenses appeared to have been charged to the main Residence Trust budget while supporting other branch events, Beatrice-led heritage functions, or personal residential activities.
Audit still needed.
No final accusation.
But enough.
Why did this matter to the council review?
Because those charges made Villa Montanari look expensive.
Beatrice then argued it required a larger internal budget.
At the same time, she used unpaid family labor to keep visible service functioning when paid workers were elsewhere.
She created the very inefficiency she cited as proof she needed more control.
Then redirected the expanded control into more events.
A machine feeding itself.
Rosalie had seen the human side.
I had seen the financial side.
Neither alone showed the whole thing.
Then Beatrice’s private calendar.
Samuel obtained it through normal family-governance disclosure after she agreed to cooperate.
Entries:
DINNER — ROSALIE SERVICE.
SILVER — ELLEN + GIRLS.
FAMILY BRUNCH — NO EXTRA PORTER; USE YOUNGER WIVES.
Those words.
Use.
Not ask.
Then one note beside the council date:
KEEP ROSALIE IN KITCHEN UNTIL HOUSE VOTE COMPLETE.
There.
No ambiguity.
She knew Rosalie intended to speak.
She planned to prevent it.
Why?
Because if Rosalie told the council what “family participation” looked like in reality, Beatrice’s comparison to professional management collapsed.
